Surveillance & PA Systems FAQs
CCTV privacy obligations, system basics, and getting the most from a public address setup.
Do I need to follow privacy rules if I install CCTV at my business?
Yes. New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020 applies to any CCTV that could capture identifiable people, which is exactly what most footage does. You need a legitimate, clearly defined reason for surveillance, and it must not be overly intrusive. Getting this wrong can lead to real legal consequences, not just an awkward conversation.
Do I need signage for my CCTV cameras?
Yes, this is the simplest and most important step. If your cameras could capture people beyond your own property, such as someone on the footpath or a neighbour's section, you must let them know with clear, visible signage. A simple sign stating "CCTV in Operation" lets people decide for themselves whether to enter the monitored area, which is a core principle of New Zealand privacy law.
How long can I keep CCTV footage?
You shouldn't keep personal information, including video footage, for longer than you need it for its original purpose. For most New Zealand businesses, keeping footage for 30 to 90 days before secure deletion is standard practice, unless it's been flagged as part of an investigation.
Can my CCTV system also record audio?
Generally, no, and for good reason. Under the Crimes Act 1961, it's illegal to record private conversations you're not a party to. Because of this, most security cameras sold in New Zealand have audio recording disabled by default. The safest approach is to stick to video-only surveillance.
What's the difference between a DVR and an NVR system?
A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) works with older analogue cameras, with the recorder doing all the video processing, which limits resolution and features. An NVR (Network Video Recorder) is the modern standard, pairing with smart IP cameras that process video within the camera itself, giving sharper footage and more features. For any new installation today, an NVR is the right choice.
If someone asks for CCTV footage of themselves, do I have to provide it?
In most cases, yes. Individuals have a right under the Privacy Act to request access to footage that identifies them. The starting point should always be to provide footage that identifies the requester, though you may need to protect the identity of other people captured in the same footage, depending on the setting.
What is a mobile CCTV tower, and when would I use one?
A mobile CCTV tower is a self-powered, solar and cellular-connected unit that can be dropped on-site instantly with no infrastructure needed. It acts as a strong visual deterrent and often includes strobing lights, alarms, and 24/7 remote monitoring. It's ideal for temporary sites, construction projects, or evolving security needs where a permanent install isn't practical.
What does a PA system actually do, and where are they used?
A public address (PA) system amplifies and distributes voice or audio across a site, venue, or vehicle, so announcements, instructions, or alerts reach everyone clearly regardless of ambient noise. They're commonly used at events, construction sites, schools, and emergency response vehicles, anywhere clear, loud communication to a group matters.
Do I need a fixed or portable PA system?
It depends on how and where you'll use it. A fixed system suits a permanent venue or site where the same area needs covering every time. A portable PA system is the better choice if you need to move between locations, run temporary events, or want the flexibility to set up and pack down quickly. We can also arrange portable PA system hire for one-off needs.
