Hire vs Lease: Choosing the Right Model

What's the real difference between hiring and leasing?

Short-term hire suits events, festivals, and week-long projects, immediate access with no heavy upfront investment, but at a higher daily rate since it covers the logistics of cleaning, testing and rapid delivery for each booking. Long-term leasing (typically 12, 24 or 36 months) suits established businesses with ongoing communication needs, giving access to the latest technology without large capital outlay, while keeping equipment under warranty with regular maintenance included.

Why might a business choose to hire rather than buy outright?

A few reasons come up constantly: you may not have a constant need for the equipment, you might be unsure whether a particular solution will actually work for your operation before committing to the full outlay, or you simply want fixed, predictable pricing for budgeting purposes. Hiring lets you trial a solution and see the benefit firsthand before any larger investment.

What does a lease agreement typically include that a straight purchase doesn't?

A professional lease includes ongoing maintenance and support you generally don't get with a standard purchase: regular firmware updates, battery health checks with automatic replacement every 18 to 24 months, rapid repair or replacement of faulty hardware to avoid downtime, and ongoing frequency management to prevent interference from other local users.

Is there a lease-to-own option?

Yes, lease-to-own options are available alongside standard 1, 2 and 3-year lease terms, giving you a path to eventually own the equipment outright while still getting the cash-flow benefits of a lease arrangement along the way.

Costs & Liability

What happens if hired equipment is lost or damaged?

You're responsible for the equipment during the hire period. Normal wear and tear is covered by us, but in cases of significant damage beyond that, or if a unit is lost, a repair or replacement fee applies. We provide a clear schedule of equipment values at the start of the hire period so there are no surprises, and it's worth checking whether your business insurance covers hired-in equipment.

Roughly how much could a replacement cost if something goes wrong?

It depends on the equipment. A standard handset replacement typically runs around $300 plus GST, while a professional Tier 1 digital radio can cost over $800 to replace. This is exactly why we recommend taking sensible care of hired gear and checking your insurance coverage before the hire period begins.

Is there a way to protect myself from these costs without my own insurance?

Yes, an optional damage waiver is available on satellite phone and equipment hire, giving you peace of mind and protection from unexpected repair or replacement costs without needing to arrange separate cover.

Licensing, Setup & Practicalities

Do I need to sort out radio licensing myself for hired equipment?

No. For private, interference-free communication on professional UHF or VHF frequencies, a Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) licence is legally required, and we handle that entire application process on your behalf as part of the hire service, so your radios are fully compliant from day one.

Will hired equipment arrive ready to use, or do I need to set it up myself?

It arrives ready to go. Hire equipment is tested and pre-programmed to the correct frequencies before it reaches you, and units arrive programmed, labelled and fully charged so your team can start communicating the moment they're on-site.

Do I need a special licence to hire a satellite phone?

No. You don't need any licence from RSM or any other authority to use a handheld satellite phone in New Zealand. The devices are ready to use straight out of the case, making satellite phone hire genuinely simple.

What's the process for booking a satellite phone hire?

Complete the Satellite Phone Hire Agreement and email it back to us. Once we receive your completed agreement, that's treated as a firm booking.

Can hired equipment handle a site with coverage black spots?

Yes, this is one of our core specialities. If your site has black spots or covers a large area, we can deploy temporary repeaters and antenna systems alongside your hire equipment to guarantee seamless communication coverage across your entire operational zone.

What's Available to Hire

What can I actually hire from MSL?

Our hire range covers two-way radios, satellite phones, Personal Locator Beacons, CCTV systems, portable PA systems, and Variable Message Sign (VMS) trailers. Equipment is available to hire daily, weekly or monthly, alongside the longer-term 1, 2 and 3-year lease options for ongoing needs.

Is hiring CCTV genuinely more cost-effective than buying for a short project?

For short-to-medium term projects, yes. Hiring converts a capital expense into an operating cost, and the hire fee includes maintenance, support and technology updates for the duration. Returned units are also professionally wiped of any stored footage to Privacy Act standards before being redeployed.

Do you only service local Bay of Plenty businesses, or further afield too?

We're based in Mount Maunganui, but support businesses right across the country, from Kaitaia to Bluff, with mobile communication equipment and accessories, including two-way radios and satellite phones tried and tested specifically for New Zealand conditions.
