Keeping New Zealand Moving, Connected & Safe Since 2000
Mobile Systems Limited has been part of New Zealand’s communications landscape since 2000, originally trading as Tait Mobile Radio BOP. In 2008, the business was purchased by Alan Winstanley, who saw a clear need: not just to sell walkie talkies, but to help people choose the right mobile communication systems for the way they actually work and live.
At a time when telcos were pushing cheap cellular plans and encouraging businesses to abandon other technologies, Alan recognised that walkie talkies were – and still are – one of the most reliable, robust, and safety-focused communication tools available.
Today, Mobile Systems Limited is known as a dependable, brand-independent advisor, helping customers across New Zealand choose, configure, and support mobile communication systems they can rely on.
Why Mobile Systems Limited?
We are not locked into any single brand or technology. That independence is deliberate – it means you get advice that points you to the best solution for your needs, not ours.
Our Core Values & Philosophy
- Reliability above all else – if it isn’t reliable in the field, it isn’t good enough for our customers.
- NZ-specific expertise – solutions that match New Zealand terrain, industry use, and spectrum rules.
- Solutions, not just products – we focus on how your people work, not just what’s in the catalogue.
- Long-term support – we’re here for the lifespan of the equipment, not just the sale.
- Straightforward, honest advice – practical, no-nonsense, and up-front.
- Safety and operational integrity – we understand that when communications fail, people can get hurt.
- Commitment to quality – we prefer durable, professional-grade gear over “cheap and cheerful”.
- Continuous learning & knowledge sharing – we believe in educating customers and lifting communications standards.
Independent Expertise Across Radio, Cellular & Satellite
With more than 17 years of hands-on experience in mobile communications, Alan is known by customers as up-front, honest, and highly knowledgeable. That experience spans walkie talkies, in-vehicle systems, cellular boosters, and satellite connectivity.

Helping You Choose the Right Communication System
Every workplace is different. We look beyond the spec sheet and consider how your people actually work day-to-day. When we recommend a walkie talkie or other device, we look at:
- Whether the devices will suit and exceed your expectations in your real operating environment.
- The expected lifespan of the system versus the price point.
- Your ability to service, repair, and manage a fleet of devices over time.
- The availability of accessories that genuinely fit your operational needs.
- Whether the solution will keep your team safe and in touch at all times.
Are Walkie Talkies Outdated? Not Even Close.
Because walkie talkies have been around for a long time, many people assume they’re old-fashioned or past their use-by date. The reality is the opposite: walkie talkies remain one of the most robust and dependable communication systems available, across domestic, commercial, and industrial environments.
They offer instant push-to-talk communication, work independently of overloaded or unavailable cellular networks, and are built to handle tough conditions. The recent decision to upgrade all three of New Zealand’s emergency services to a walkie-talkie–based solution is a strong vote of confidence in the technology’s reliability and importance.
Real-World NZ Case Studies
Our work spans a wide range of industries and environments. Here are some examples of how we’ve helped organisations improve safety and communication in real New Zealand conditions.
Oceana Gold – Waihi
For operations at Oceana Gold in Waihi, we deployed a microwave-linked repeater site to deliver strong and reliable radio coverage across challenging mining terrain.
The result is robust, site-wide communication that supports both productivity and safety in a demanding environment.
Winstone GIB Plant – Tauriko, Tauranga
At Winstone’s new GIB manufacturing plant in Tauriko, we supplied Tait intrinsically safe hand-held walkie talkies along with position location services.
This allows operations staff to know where every worker is at any point in time – a major benefit for both safety and coordination in a large industrial facility.
Hobbiton Movie Set – Matamata
The iconic Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata uses a mix of Tait and Hytera walkie talkies to keep tours running smoothly and staff safe across the site.
We recently helped them install a solar-powered repeater system to increase radio coverage, ensuring reliable communications even in more remote or obstructed areas of the property.
Port Operations & Transport Support
Our in-house workshop and servicing crew regularly support transport operators working in high-pressure environments such as the Port of Tauranga.
When a communication issue arises, customers can call in at short notice for immediate attention, minimising downtime during critical loading and unloading operations.
Custom-Built Radio & Communication Kits
Not every requirement fits neatly into a standard box. Mobile Systems Limited designs and builds custom communication kits tailored to specific, real-world needs – including one-off builds for unique situations.
Example: Portable PA System for Rowing Regattas
One such system is a portable public address unit housed in a water-tight box. It uses a low-power walkie talkie radio receiver, with audio transmitted through a loud hailer.
This solution allows rowing regatta organisers and coaches to:
- Commentate races in real-time while on the water.
- Communicate instructions clearly to rowing crews.
- Operate confidently in a wet, exposed environment without risking delicate equipment.
It’s a practical example of how careful use of walkie talkie technology can solve specific communication challenges in a simple, reliable way.
In-House Workshop & Ongoing Support
Reliable communication doesn’t end at the point of sale. Mobile Systems Limited operates with an in-house workshop and servicing crew, giving customers a local, responsive support option when equipment needs attention.
Customers value the ability to call in at short notice – especially when operations depend on having radios and communication systems working properly right now, not next week.
This commitment to long-term support is a key part of how we do business: we stand behind the systems we recommend and help keep them working for the long haul.
