GPS & Fleet Management FAQs

Tracking, RUC compliance, and getting real visibility over your vehicles and assets.

What does a GPS fleet tracking system actually do?

A good system shows live vehicle location, route history, driving behaviour, and maintenance scheduling, all in one dashboard. For most clients, the real value is simple: knowing exactly where every vehicle is, right now, without making a phone call. Many systems also plug into your vehicle's onboard diagnostics to flag engine faults before they become costly breakdowns.

Is GPS tracking only worthwhile for large fleets?

No. Even a handful of vehicles benefits from tracking, particularly for proving job locations, managing after-hours use, or recovering a vehicle quickly if it's stolen. We scale the system to your fleet size, not the other way around.

Hardwired or plug-and-play: which tracker should I choose?

Hardwired units wire directly into the vehicle's electrical system, making them difficult to bypass and the gold standard for heavy plant, machinery, and commercial fleets needing reliable Road User Charges data. Plug-and-play OBD-II devices are easier to install but can be knocked loose or unplugged, which creates data gaps. For trailers, skip bins, or other unpowered assets, a battery-powered tracker is the practical choice.

Can GPS tracking help with Road User Charges (RUC)?

Yes, and this is one of the biggest practical wins. A certified GPS device accurately records distance travelled, automating RUC purchasing and ensuring you claim the maximum off-road rebate. Manual logbooks and paperwork commonly lead to businesses overpaying RUC by up to 10 percent through administrative errors and missed off-road credits.

What's changing with RUC in New Zealand?

New Zealand is transitioning to a fully electronic, distance-based RUC system (eRUC), with the new system planned to be operational in 2027. Early adoption of eRUC-compatible tracking now means your business is ready ahead of the legislative change, rather than scrambling to comply later.

Does GPS tracking help with Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) reporting?

Yes. A professional tracking system provides clear, defensible records that distinguish business use from private use, which significantly simplifies FBT reporting and reduces the time spent on manual logbooks at the end of each month.

How quickly does fleet tracking pay for itself?

Most fleets see a full return on investment within three to six months of installation, through a combination of reduced fuel spend, lower administrative costs, and recovered RUC credits for off-road travel. Reducing harsh braking, speeding, and excessive idling alone can meaningfully cut fuel use.

Can I track trailers, generators, or other unpowered equipment?

Yes. Battery-powered GPS trackers are designed exactly for this, monitoring assets that don't have their own power source, such as trailers, shipping containers, or site equipment. These units use power-saving modes to extend battery life over weeks or months between charges.
