UHF and VHF aren't a "which is better" choice, they're different tools for different terrain. VHF's longer wavelength travels further across open country with fewer obstacles, which is why it's the standard for large farms, marine environments and open rural land.

Forestry and Agriculture
Long-range VHF is the standard across large, open properties where the nearest cellular tower might be an hour's drive away. A lone worker mustering stock or felling timber stays in contact with base, able to report a hazard or call for help without relying on a phone signal that was never there to begin with.
Construction Sites
UHF's ability to penetrate concrete and steel makes it the standard on busy, multi-level sites. A crane operator needs a constant, clear line to the dogman on the ground, and that link has to survive the noise and structural interference a phone call simply can't handle.
Marine Environments

Emergency Services
New Zealand's Public Safety Network, built on P25 Phase 2 technology, is what allows Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, and ambulance services to share a common, interoperable radio network, replacing the previous NGCC-managed arrangements now delivered under SafetyNet Critical Communications since July 2026.
