PLB Rescue Activation Sequence

A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) activation sequenceΒ is a critical procedure used to initiate an emergency distress signal. This process alerts search and rescue authorities to your location. The sequence can vary slightly depending on the PLB model, but typically follows these steps:

1. Assess the Emergency

  • Confirm that the situation is life-threatening and activation is necessary.

  • PLBs should only be activated in genuine emergencies.

2. Retrieve and Prepare the PLB

  • Remove the PLB from its storage location (e.g., backpack, lifejacket, or mount).

  • If the PLB has an antenna, deploy it fully and ensure it’s pointed vertically for optimal signal transmission.

3. Activate the PLB

  • Press and hold the activation button (usually marked with β€œON” or a distress symbol) for several seconds until the activation light or indicator turns on.

  • Some models may require you to remove a protective cover or break a seal to prevent accidental activation.

4. Verify Activation

  • Check for visual signals (flashing LED) and/or audible beeps that confirm the unit is transmitting.

  • Some newer models may have a small display indicating GPS lock and successful distress transmission.

5. Position the PLB Correctly

  • Place the PLB in a clear, unobstructed location with a clear view of the sky to acquire GPS coordinates and transmit the strongest signal.

  • Keep it elevated if possible, away from metal objects and water surfaces.

6. Remain in Place if Safe

  • Stay near the activated PLB unless it’s unsafe. Rescue teams will home in on the signal's location.

7. Do Not Turn Off the PLB

  • Leave the PLB active until rescue services arrive. Turning it off can delay or prevent successful rescue.
