The Importance of Having a VHF Radio on Board

As a Coastguard skipper, it still amazes me how many recreational boaties head out without a marine VHF radio on board. A phone feels like enough, right up until you're behind a headland with no signal and something's gone wrong.

VHF radios are cheap, tough, and simple to use, and they solve a problem your phone fundamentally can't. Here's why one belongs on your boat, and what's actually changed with the technology recently.

Why VHF Beats a Phone in an Emergency

The single biggest advantage of a VHF radio is that it's a one-to-many system. Broadcast on Channel 16, the international call-up and distress channel, and every VHF radio switched on in your area hears you. If you need help fast, nearby boats are often your quickest option, not a phone call to shore.

A phone call only ever reaches one person, and that help usually has to come from land. VHF radios are also built for the marine environment: fully waterproof, resistant to salt corrosion, and generally more dependable exactly when you need them in a hurry.


02 · Fixed vs Handheld

Fixed vs Handheld: Which Do You Actually Need

Range comes down to output power, measured in watts. A typical fixed-mount radio runs around 25 watts and can cover well beyond 20 nautical miles in clear, unobstructed conditions. A handheld typically runs 5 to 6 watts, giving a rough range of 12 to 18 kilometres, though antenna type and mounting affect this too.

A fixed radio draws power from your vessel's electrical system, so it's less likely to be interrupted, and it's straightforward to install with just a 12V power source and an antenna. A handheld runs on rechargeable batteries, so it needs regular charging, but it has one real advantage a fixed radio can't match: it goes with you if you're thrown overboard.

That's why most experienced boaties treat a handheld as a genuine backup, kept tethered to your person or in a grab bag alongside a knife, flares, a personal locator beacon and a torch, not as a replacement for a fixed unit.

Entry-level GME fixed VHF radios in NZ currently start from around $450, and handhelds from around $230, though features like DSC, GPS and floatation push the price up from there.

Why Some Boats Have Such Tall Antennas

It's not the length of your antenna that matters most, it's the height it's mounted at. Yachts have a real advantage here, mounting their antenna at the top of the mast, well above the shadowing effect of hills, swells or the vessel itself, which lets the signal reach further over the horizon.

Modern antenna designs achieve better performance from shorter lengths than older antennas needed, so a tall antenna isn't strictly a requirement for good range anymore. The condition of your antenna cable and connectors also affects performance, corroded connectors are a common, easily missed cause of a weak signal.

DSC and What's Changed

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) lets a radio send an automated distress alert on Channel 70, including your MMSI number and GPS position, at the press of a button, no voice call required.

Worth knowing if you've read older guides: for a long time, DSC alerts in NZ weren't actively monitored by emergency services, and voice calls on Channel 16 were the reliable method. That's changed. Both Channel 16 and Channel 70 are now monitored 24/7 by Maritime NZ's coastal VHF network. If you're relying on older information that says otherwise, it's out of date.

To use DSC properly, your radio needs an MMSI number, obtained through Coastguard Boating Education alongside your vessel callsign, a modest one-off fee that's well worth paying.


05 · Getting Legal

Getting Legal: The MVOC

Operating a marine VHF radio in NZ isn't just a practical choice, it's a legal one. Under the Radiocommunications Act 1989, you need the Maritime VHF Operator's Certificate (MVOC) to operate a VHF radio, the only exception being a genuine distress situation, where you're entitled to use any means necessary to call for help.

The MVOC is issued by Coastguard Boating Education, doesn't expire, and is the standard requirement for recreational VHF use in NZ's coastal waters. It's a different, more basic certificate to the MRROC, which covers SSB radios and operation beyond the 12 nautical mile coastal limit, most recreational boaties only need the MVOC.

Getting the Right Radio for Your Boat
