The standard kit includes the dish itself (commonly called "Dishy"), a basic kickstand base for ground-level use, the indoor Wi-Fi router, a power cable, and a 15-metre cable connecting the dish to the router. For a simple ground or roof test with a clear sky view, that's genuinely enough to get online.
What it doesn't include is anything built for a permanent commercial installation. The kickstand base is designed to get you connected quickly, not to survive a coastal southerly or a decade on a farm roof.
The Ethernet adapter most people forget
If you're connecting Starlink into an existing business network, a router, switches, or a CCTV system, you'll need an Ethernet adapter. It isn't included in the standard kit but it's non-negotiable for anything beyond a standalone Wi-Fi setup, giving you a stable, hardwired connection instead of relying on the built-in router's Wi-Fi alone.
Choosing the Right Mount for Your Site
Getting the mount right is the single biggest factor in whether a Starlink installation stays trouble-free or turns into repeated callouts after the first storm. This is true whether it's a farmhouse roof, a rural workshop, or a temporary site cabin.
Roof mounts
Two mounting styles cover most pitched-roof and flat-roof situations. A standard roof mount needs to be fixed directly to the building's structural rafters or trusses, never just the cladding or roofing iron. On tile roofs specifically, a purpose-built tile mount that hooks under the tile and secures to the rafters below is the only reliable approach, since drilling directly through a tile risks cracking it and creating a leak path.
Pole mounts
A pole mount suits sites where the roofline doesn't offer a clear sky view, or where a freestanding installation makes more sense than putting load on an existing structure. The pole and its footing need to be treated as genuine structural infrastructure, sized for local wind exposure, not just for holding the dish up on a calm day. Coastal sites and elevated or exposed rural properties need extra allowance for wind loading.
Materials matter more on the coast
Corrosion is the quiet killer of cheap mounting hardware in New Zealand's coastal and rural environments. A standard steel mount can show significant rust within a year in a salt-exposed location. Hot-dip galvanised steel or marine-grade aluminium is the realistic starting point for anything installed within reach of sea air.

Starlink's Flat High-Performance kit is built for in-motion use on vehicles and vessels, but the hardware alone doesn't make a mobile installation work. The mount and power setup do the heavy lifting.
Vehicle installations
Utes, trucks, and mobile site offices need vibration-dampening mounts that protect the dish from the constant movement of rural roads and worksite conditions. A mount designed for a stationary roof will not hold up to sustained vibration.
Marine installations
Vessels need marine-grade, corrosion-resistant mounts designed to handle both saltwater exposure and the motion of a vessel underway, not a standard kickstand or roof bracket adapted for the job. Real-world testing around New Zealand's coast has shown Starlink maintaining coverage out to roughly 40 nautical miles from shore, though actual performance depends on the specific site, mount quality, and sky visibility from the vessel.
DIY vs Professional Installation
A simple ground or roof installation with a clear sky view is genuinely within reach for most people, using the Starlink app's built-in obstruction checker to find a good spot. That's not where the risk usually sits.
The risk shows up on anything beyond a straightforward ground-level setup:
- Working at height on a roof or using ladders falls under WorkSafe NZ regulations, requiring proper fall protection and a safely managed work area
- Structural fixing gets it wrong more often than people expect, with mounts fastened to cladding instead of rafters being one of the most common and costly mistakes
- Cable routing and weatherproofing matter more than they look like they should, since a poorly sealed cable entry point is a common cause of water ingress and long-term damage
- Vehicle and marine mounting needs specialised hardware and installation know-how that a standard roof mount doesn't cover
