What Bluetooth Actually Is (and Isn't)
Here's the confusion worth clearing up first. Bluetooth is not the same thing as the two-way radio signal itself. Your UHF or VHF radio talks to other radios over distances that can stretch for kilometres, especially with a repeater in the mix. Bluetooth does something completely different. It's a short-range wireless link, typically working out to around 10 metres, designed to connect two nearby devices without a cable between them.
Think of it like this. Your radio is the long-distance phone line. Bluetooth is just the cordless handset sitting next to it. One does the heavy lifting over distance, the other saves you from tangled wires close to your body.
Bluetooth operates in the 2.4GHz frequency band, an internationally shared range also used by Wi-Fi and plenty of household gadgets. In New Zealand, it runs under a general user licence issued by Radio Spectrum Management, which means anyone can use it without applying for a permit or paying a fee, provided the equipment itself is properly compliant.
Where Bluetooth Fits in Professional Radio Setups

Electrically Noisy Environments Can Cause Problems
Bluetooth shares its frequency band with plenty of other devices, and heavy machinery, welding equipment and industrial electrical noise can occasionally interfere with the connection. It's not a common failure, but it's a real one, and it's worth testing in your actual work environment before committing your whole team to wireless earpieces.
It's an Accessory, Not a Comms System
Bluetooth only connects the earpiece to the radio. It doesn't extend your radio's range by a single metre. If your team's real problem is coverage across a farm, a forestry block or a construction site, that's a job for the right UHF or VHF radio and antenna setup, not a Bluetooth accessory.
Used for what it's actually built for, hands-free convenience at close range, Bluetooth does its job well. Ask it to solve a coverage problem and it will let you down every time.
Is Bluetooth Right for Your Team?
Ask yourself one honest question. Does your team need their hands free while they're talking?
If they're climbing, driving, operating machinery, or working somewhere a dangling cable is a genuine snag hazard, a Bluetooth earpiece is a real safety upgrade, not just a nicety. Security and event staff often prefer it too, since it keeps the setup discreet without a visible cable running down to a radio on the belt.
If your team works in consistently wet, dusty or electrically noisy conditions, a traditional wired earpiece or speaker microphone is still the more bulletproof choice. There's no battery to manage and nothing to pair. Match the accessory to the job, not the other way around.
Buying Compliant Bluetooth Gear in NZ
Bluetooth being licence-free doesn't mean anything goes. Devices sold in New Zealand, including Bluetooth accessories, still need to carry proper RCM or R-NZ compliance labelling to confirm they meet the technical standards for operating here.
