What Actually Makes an LED Different
A traditional halogen or incandescent bulb makes light by heating a thin metal filament until it glows. That's effective, but wasteful. Most of the energy going into the bulb comes out as heat, not light, and that filament is exactly the part that eventually burns out.
An LED, short for light-emitting diode, works on a completely different principle. It's a small semiconductor chip that produces light directly when electrical current passes through it, with no filament involved at all. Think of the difference like a wood fire versus an induction cooktop. Both produce heat, but one is throwing off a lot of wasted energy to get there, and the other is doing it far more directly.
That difference in approach is why LEDs run cooler, use less power for the same brightness, and simply don't have a filament to fail. It's not a minor tweak, it's a genuinely different way of making light.
Why LED Beats Halogen for Vehicle and Marine Lighting
None of this matters much in theory. What matters is what it means for a light bar bolted to a ute roof or a beacon mounted on a trawler.
Lower Current Draw
LED lighting pulls a fraction of the current a halogen equivalent needs for the same output. On a vehicle already running a two-way radio, GPS tracker, and other accessories off the same battery, that matters. Less draw means less strain on your electrical system and less risk of a flat battery after a long day with everything switched on.
Heat and Longevity
Because so little energy is wasted as heat, LED units run cooler and last dramatically longer than halogen bulbs, which matters when a light bar is mounted somewhere awkward to reach for a bulb change. Fewer failures, fewer callouts, less time off the road.
Built to Survive NZ Conditions
Vehicle and marine lighting takes a beating in New Zealand, salt spray on the coast, dust on a forestry block, constant vibration on rough farm tracks. LED units are typically sealed solid state devices, which makes them naturally more resistant to vibration and moisture than a bulb with a fragile glowing filament inside it.
Amber, White, or Magenta? What NZ Law Actually Says
Here's where a lot of people get caught out, and it's worth getting right before you buy, not after.
Headlamps and Driving Lamps
Under Waka Kotahi rules, main beam headlamps and daytime running lamps must be white or amber in colour. If you're adding driving lamps to supplement your headlights, they need to meet the same colour rule and the correct wiring requirements, switching off automatically with your dipped beam where required.
Work Lamps Are a Different Category Entirely
This is the part that catches people out. A lot of LED light bars sold in New Zealand don't meet the approved standard for headlamps, which means they legally can't be used or wired as one. Instead, they're classed as work lamps, fitted to illuminate a work area or scene while the vehicle is stationary or moving slowly, not for driving on the open road. A work lamp must be wired to operate independently of your headlamps, not alongside them.
If you're after a light bar for genuine road driving illumination, check it carries the correct standards marking before you buy. If it's a scene or work light for a site, that's a different, and often simpler, job.
Warning Beacons and Colour
Amber is the standard colour for general hazard and warning use on NZ roads, covering overdimension loads, construction, tow, and utility vehicles. Colours reserved for specific emergency service use are a separate matter entirely, so if you're fitting a beacon for a purpose beyond standard hazard warning, confirm the correct colour and use case for your vehicle type before installing anything.
Choosing a Light Bar: Length and Application
Bigger isn't automatically better here. The right length depends on the vehicle and the job.
