Two-way radio splits broadly into UHF, which punches through concrete, steel and structural clutter, and VHF, which carries further across open ground. That's why UHF tends to dominate construction and industrial sites, while VHF is more common in forestry, farming and marine use. On larger sites, a properly licensed system can be extended with repeaters, so a signal from a basement or a back paddock still reaches the office.
Handheld or vehicle-mounted, professional radio equipment from brands like Tait, Hytera, Motorola, Icom, GME, Entel and Uniden is built for genuinely tough NZ conditions, not the light indoor use most consumer walkie-talkies are designed for. If you want a private, protected channel rather than a shared licence-free one, you'll typically need a land mobile licence from RSM, and it's worth budgeting properly for it: current annual fees run from $190 for a standard individual licence up to $1,800 for unlimited repeater locations.

Push-to-Talk Over Cellular: Radio Habits, Nationwide Reach

Cellular Signal Boosters and the 3G Switch-Off
Bought a signal booster online and found it hasn't helped, or made things worse? That's a common story, and there's a legal reason behind it. Radio Spectrum Management requires mobile signal boosters to be approved, because an uncertified device doesn't just fail to help you, it can genuinely interfere with the wider cellular network, including nearby emergency calls. Only boosters approved by Spark, One NZ or 2degrees, such as Cel-Fi units, are legal to install and use in New Zealand.
There's a second wrinkle that's caught plenty of businesses out recently. New Zealand's 3G networks were fully retired on 31 March 2026. Any booster, GPS tracker, alarm panel or older device that was still leaning on a 3G-only connection has already stopped working and needs replacing with 4G or 5G-capable hardware. Satellite isn't a substitute for two-way radio or PoC on a working site. It's not designed for the constant back-and-forth chatter of a busy crew, and it needs a reasonably clear view of the sky to work at all. Where it earns its keep is as the layer underneath everything else, the one that still works during a storm, a network outage, or when a lone worker is somewhere the mobile network has simply never reached.
