04 · Fixing Blackspots, Legally

Cellular Signal Boosters and the 3G Switch-Off

Bought a signal booster online and found it hasn't helped, or made things worse? That's a common story, and there's a legal reason behind it. Radio Spectrum Management requires mobile signal boosters to be approved, because an uncertified device doesn't just fail to help you, it can genuinely interfere with the wider cellular network, including nearby emergency calls. Only boosters approved by Spark, One NZ or 2degrees, such as Cel-Fi units, are legal to install and use in New Zealand.

There's a second wrinkle that's caught plenty of businesses out recently. New Zealand's 3G networks were fully retired on 31 March 2026. Any booster, GPS tracker, alarm panel or older device that was still leaning on a 3G-only connection has already stopped working and needs replacing with 4G or 5G-capable hardware.
