What a Unified Communications Platform Actually Means
What does "unified communications" actually get you that a good radio system doesn't already do? The honest answer is one thing: it lets people on genuinely different networks talk to each other as if they weren't.
A traditional UHF or VHF radio system is a closed loop. Everyone on it needs a compatible radio, on the right frequency, within range of the same repeater. A PoC handset is a different animal entirely, riding on the public cellular network with effectively nationwide reach, but only where there's coverage. On their own, these are two separate conversations that happen to sound similar.
A unified communications platform sits a gateway between them. It takes voice traffic from your DMR or analogue radio system and bridges it into a broadband PTT talkgroup, and vice versa. Press the button on your UHF handheld in a forestry block, and a supervisor on a PoC handset in town hears it, in the same talkgroup, in something close to real time.

How does the actual bridging happen? Not with magic, and not with a single universal standard either. Each major radio manufacturer has built its own gateway technology, and it's worth understanding roughly how they work before you commit to one.
Motorola: WAVE PTX with LMR Interoperability
Motorola's WAVE PTX is a broadband PTT platform, the same one behind the TLK110 handset MSL supplies. On its own, it connects PoC and Wi-Fi PTT users to each other. Add the LMR Interoperability option, and a physical WAVE PTX Radio Gateway connects into your existing MOTOTRBO DMR system, bridging talkgroups both ways. Your existing DMR radios don't need replacing, and a WAVE PTX user can be added to a talkgroup that already has UHF/VHF radios on it.
Hytera: SmartOne and HyTalk Connect
Hytera's approach is broadly similar in outcome, different in name. SmartOne is Hytera's dispatch application, capable of managing calls across analogue, DMR, PoC and third-party radio networks from one console. HyTalk Connect is the specific integration that bridges an existing Hytera DMR trunking network with Hytera's PoC network, so a mobile workforce on PoC handsets and a fixed DMR system can share the same wide-area talkgroup.
Both approaches need proper planning and configuration, not a plug-and-play afterthought. This is system design work, not a firmware update.

Is this worth the added complexity? For the right operation, yes, and it usually comes down to one of a few recurring situations.

Getting the Licensing Right in NZ
Does adding a PoC gateway change your radio licensing obligations? Mostly no, and it's worth being precise about why.
PoC devices operate over the public cellular network, so they don't require a Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) frequency licence in their own right. Your existing UHF or VHF system is a different matter. If it operates on a licensed commercial frequency, that licence remains in force exactly as it was, gateway or no gateway. Adding a bridge to a broadband network doesn't touch your RSM obligations on the radio side, and it doesn't create a new licensing requirement on the PoC side either.
What does change is the technical configuration work. Setting up talkgroup mapping correctly between a licensed DMR system and a PoC platform is a job for someone who understands both sides properly, not a weekend project.
