Motorola MOTOTRBO R7Ex, ATEX/IECEx Certified Portable Radio
UHF 400-527MHz, genuinely intrinsically safe for hazardous areas. Price on application, contact MSL to confirm.
Overview
The Motorola R7Ex is the genuine ATEX and IECEx certified member of the R7 family, built for teams working around flammable gases, vapours, mist or combustible dust. It replaces the older DP4401Ex and DP4801Ex as Motorola's current-generation hazardous-area radio, carrying the same audio and connectivity upgrades as the standard R7 range in a distinctive blue housing that makes safe-to-use radios easy to identify on site.
Unlike the standard R7 Enable and R7-TIA models MSL already stocks, which carry a US-only UL TIA-4950 rating at most, the R7Ex is genuinely ATEX and IECEx certified, the certification most NZ and international hazardous-area operators actually need.
Key Features
- Genuine ATEX and IECEx certification means intrinsically safe operation in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas where flammable gases, vapours, mist or dust may be present.
- Distinctive blue housing means safe-to-use radios are easy to identify at a glance on site.
- Loud audio up to 108 phons means your team hears clearly over noisy machinery, plant equipment, and heavy vehicles.

- IP66 and IP68 rated means dust-tight and protected against water jets and submersion.

FAQs
Is this genuinely certified for hazardous areas?
Yes, unlike MSL's standard R7 range which carries a US-only UL TIA-4950 rating, the R7Ex is genuinely ATEX and IECEx certified for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas.
What's the difference between the NKP and FKP models?
The NKP (no keypad) model has no display or keypad for simple, fast operation. The FKP (full keypad) model adds a keypad and display for text messaging and menu navigation.
Do I need a licence to use this?
Two-way radio use typically requires appropriate licensing, check current NZ requirements for your application.
Can I use any battery or antenna with this radio in a hazardous area?
No, only genuine ATEX/IECEx-approved accessories are certified for use with this radio in a hazardous atmosphere. Using a non-approved accessory voids the intrinsic safety rating.
Is a VHF version available?
Not yet, Motorola has only released the R7Ex in UHF at launch, with a VHF model expected later.
