DMR stands for Digital Mobile Radio, an open standard set by ETSI, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, rather than a technology owned by any single company. Think of it like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi: a shared specification that different manufacturers, Hytera, Motorola, Tait and others, all build compatible equipment around.
Where an analogue radio converts your voice directly into a continuous radio wave, a DMR radio converts your voice into digital data first, then transmits it.
