Step One: Confirm Your Band

Before you look at a single model name, answer this: is your team on VHF or UHF? Every year we get a call from someone who's bought radios online only to find they can't talk to the rest of their fleet. Nine times out of ten, it's a band mismatch.

VHF and UHF radios cannot communicate with each other, full stop. If your team already runs one band, any new radio has to match it. This isn't a spec to skim past, it's the first thing to check, before price, before features, before anything else.

Starting from scratch? VHF (136–174MHz) generally suits open, rural terrain with fewer obstructions. UHF (400–527MHz) generally handles built-up areas, buildings, and dense vegetation better. If you're not sure, tell us your site and we'll confirm which suits before you buy anything.

The Handheld Ladder: HP602 to HP782

The ladder logic is straightforward: HP602 is the value entry point. HP682 adds more programmable control and a choice between the standard version or one with GPS and Bluetooth built in. Rule of thumb: the more your team relies on hands-free safety features, like automatic location reporting or a lone worker alarm, the further up this ladder you'll want to go. If your team just needs solid voice communication, don't pay for what you won't use.

Working Somewhere Hazardous?

If your team works around fuel, gas, mining, or anywhere with an explosive atmosphere, none of the four radios above are the right starting point, no matter how rugged they look on paper.

Intrinsically safe (Ex-rated) radios are independently certified so they can't generate a spark capable of igniting flammable gases or dust. Hytera's HP712 EX and HP792 EX cover this tier, built on the same H-series chassis but certified Ex ib IIC for genuinely hazardous work.

Fleet Vehicles

HM652 and HM782 mobiles cover vehicle fleets and fixed base installations. HM652 is the entry-level option, HM782 adds GPS, trunking, and telemetry to match the HP782 handheld tier. Extending Coverage

HR-652 is a compact, wall-mount repeater for single-site coverage. HR-1062E costs more but delivers wider range, higher output, and remote diagnostics, worth it for sites planning to scale or needing IP-networked monitoring.

No Shared Radio Infrastructure?

Hytera's PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular) radios, P50, P50 Pro, P60, and the in-vehicle MNC360, ride the cellular network instead of a licensed frequency. No repeater network to build, no RSM licence required. This suits teams spread across a wide area without dedicated radio infrastructure.
