Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licence to use a Hytera DMR radio in New Zealand?

Most Hytera DMR handhelds and mobiles operate on licensed UHF or VHF frequencies, so you'll need a radio licence through Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) before use. PoC radios like the P50 and P50 Pro run over the cellular network instead, so they don't carry the same licensing requirement.

Can I mix VHF and UHF radios on the same network?

No. VHF and UHF radios can't communicate with each other directly, so every radio on your network needs to match the band you're licensed for.

What's the difference between a standard handheld and an intrinsically safe (Ex-rated) model?

Intrinsically safe radios are built and certified so they can't generate a spark capable of igniting flammable gases or dust, essential for fuel depots, mining, or other hazardous-area work. Standard rugged radios are tough, but they aren't certified for these environments.

Are any of these radios waterproof or dustproof?

Most of the range carries an IP67 or IP68 rating, built to handle rain, dust, and the odd dunking. Always check the specific model's IP rating against your working environment, a wharf or dairy shed has different demands to an office fleet.
