All-in-One Portable Systems vs Separate Components
The traditional way to build a PA system is component by component: a microphone feeding a mixer, the mixer feeding an amplifier, the amplifier driving a set of speakers, all connected with dedicated audio cabling. Get every link in that chain right and you have excellent, flexible sound. Get one link wrong, a cheap microphone or an underpowered amp, and the whole system sounds as weak as its worst part.
That approach still has its place for permanent installs and larger productions. But for most schools, event organisers, sports clubs and site teams, a modern all-in-one portable PA rolls the mixer, amplifier, speaker and battery into a single unit that's ready to go in minutes, with a wireless microphone paired straight out of the box. Less to carry, less to wire up, and far less that can go wrong on the day.
When Separate Components Still Make Sense
If you're running a fixed installation, a large venue with multiple zones, or a setup that needs specific mixing for music and speech at the same time, separate components with a proper mixer still give you the most control. For everything else, from toolbox talks to school assemblies to market days, an all-in-one system gets you clear sound with a fraction of the setup effort.
Microphones: Matching Type to the Job
Get the microphone wrong and no amount of amplifier power will fix it. This is the one component worth spending the most time getting right, because it decides how naturally the presenter, foreman or MC can actually do their job while speaking.
- Handheld: Best where one person speaks at a time and can hold a mic, such as Q&A sessions, prizegivings or MC duties.
- Lapel (lavalier): Clips to clothing and frees the hands, good for presenters who need to gesture or use a laptop.
- Headset: Stays in a fixed position relative to the mouth, ideal for fitness instructors, tour guides or anyone moving and speaking continuously.
- Beltpack transmitter: Pairs with either a lapel or headset mic and clips to a belt, keeping the transmitter out of the way during active work.

Power and Coverage: Matching Wattage to Your Crowd
More watts is not automatically better. A system with far more power than a small room needs will be harsh and uncomfortable at any usable volume, and one with too little will simply disappear under crowd noise, traffic or machinery. The right call comes down to crowd size and whether you're indoors or outdoors.

For genuinely large or spread-out sites, look for a system that supports slave speakers linked wirelessly, rather than assuming one unit's speaker alone will cover the distance. The Challenger 1000, for example, links to additional speakers roughly 100 metres apart without running a single extra cable.
Wireless Range, Expansion and Battery Life
Wireless microphones in New Zealand operate in specific licensed and licence-exempt UHF frequency bands. Cheaper or off-brand wireless mics can suffer real interference at busy events, near other wireless equipment, or in built-up areas where the same frequencies are shared. Reputable brands manage this with proper channel selection and, on higher-end models, true diversity receivers that reduce dropouts.
Bluetooth streaming is genuinely useful for background music or playing pre-recorded audio straight from a phone, and most modern portable systems now support it alongside their wireless microphone receivers. It is not, however, a substitute for a proper UHF wireless mic system when speech clarity across a crowd is the priority.
Battery Life
Battery-powered portability is one of the biggest practical advantages of modern PA systems over older mains-only setups. Expect roughly 8 to 10 hours of typical use from a well-specified portable unit, though this drops with continuous music playback at higher volumes. If your day involves back-to-back sessions, it's worth asking whether the battery is user-replaceable or needs a full recharge between uses.
Buy or Hire?
Not every need justifies a purchase. If you're running one event a year, a single school gala, or an occasional community meeting, hiring a portable PA system for the day or the week often makes far more financial sense than buying and storing a unit that spends fifty weeks a year in a cupboard.
Buying makes more sense once you're using a system regularly, whether that's a sports club running weekly fixtures, a construction team doing regular site briefings, or a school with assemblies every week. At that point, the cost per use drops quickly and having your own gear on hand, charged and ready, becomes the more practical option.
