Motorola MOTOTRBO Ion, Android Smart Radio
Voice, broadband data and full multimedia, always on. Price on application, contact MSL to confirm.
Overview
The Motorola MOTOTRBO Ion is Motorola's first business-ready smart radio, combining digital mobile radio (DMR) push-to-talk with broadband data, Wi-Fi and full Android multimedia in a single rugged device. Where a standard two-way radio gives you voice, Ion adds a touchscreen, camera, and access to the Google Play Store, so your team can run barcode scanning, ticketing, tracking and video streaming apps from the same device they use to talk to each other.
For Bay of Plenty operations juggling voice comms and mobile workflow apps on separate devices, Ion is built to bring both together without the added bulk or cost of carrying two devices.
Key Features
- Always-on voice and broadband data means your team stays connected over DMR, Wi-Fi, and 3G/4G LTE, with automatic Seamless Voice Handover between DMR and broadband as coverage changes.
- Full Android platform with open app ecosystem means access to the Google Play Store, including barcode scanning, ticketing, location tracking, and video streaming apps.
- 4 inch rugged touchscreen with Gorilla Glass means a familiar smartphone-style interface that still survives a tough worksite.
- IP68 rated and intrinsically safe (UL TIA-4950 with approved battery) means dust-tight, waterproof to 2 metres for 2 hours, and rated for use in qualifying hazardous locations under a US standard, always confirm your specific hazardous area requirements before deploying it.
- Industry-leading audio means your team hears and is heard clearly even in loud environments.
- Integrated camera means your team can capture and stream photos and video directly from the radio.
- Built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi means wireless accessories and over-the-air updates without taking radios out of the field.
Applications
- Transport and logistics fleets needing voice plus tracking apps
- Retail, hospitality and tourism teams running ticketing or POS-adjacent apps
- Security teams needing photo and video capture in the field
- Manufacturing sites combining voice comms with scanning workflows

FAQs
Is this waterproof?
Yes, it's IP68 rated, fully dust-tight and protected against immersion in up to 2 metres of water for 2 hours.
Do I need a licence to use this?
The DMR voice function typically requires appropriate radio licensing in NZ, check current requirements for your application. The broadband data and Wi-Fi functions don't require a radio licence.
Is this intrinsically safe for hazardous areas?
With the approved battery fitted, it's UL certified to the TIA-4950 standard, a US hazardous-location standard. This is not the same as ATEX or IECEx certification, confirm this covers your specific hazardous area requirements before deploying it.
Who is this suited to?
Teams who currently carry a radio and a smartphone or handheld scanner separately, and want to combine voice communication with app-based workflows like tracking, ticketing, or barcode scanning on one device.
