Where Are GME Radios Actually Made?
GME has been building radios in Australia since 1959, and it remains a privately owned, 100% Australian company today. It's the only Australian manufacturer of UHF CB radios and 406 MHz emergency beacons, which is a genuinely rare claim in an industry where most brands design locally and then ship the actual manufacturing offshore.
The factory itself sits in Winston Hills, in Sydney's western suburbs. It's a purpose-built headquarters that opened in 2013, and it now employs over 245 staff across research and development, engineering, quality assurance, manufacturing, warehousing, sales and technical service. Everything happens under that one roof.
That's the short answer to "where are GME radios made". Not stamped together from parts sourced across three continents. Designed, engineered, built and tested in one place, by one company, since before most of us were born.
Inside the Factory: How a GME Radio Comes Together
Most global radio brands rely on contract manufacturers, meaning the design team never actually sees the assembly line. GME does the opposite. It's a vertically integrated operation, so the same site that designs a new model also builds it, tests it, and ships it.
The production process itself is fairly straightforward once you see it laid out. Printed circuit boards are populated on a surface mount technology line (GME upgraded to a new Yamaha SMT line in 2019 to lift output capacity), then larger components get hand-placed by production staff in what GME calls the top-load area. From there, the finished board is mechanically mated with the radio's chassis and run through a full test regime before it ever reaches a warehouse shelf.
A Rapid Prototyping Facility on the Same Site
GME also runs a rapid prototyping facility at Winston Hills, with CNC milling and lathe machines, an injection moulding machine, two 3D printers, a PCB laser machine and an optical measuring machine. That's what lets a new model go from concept sketch to a working prototype without waiting months on an overseas supplier to tool up.

Why "Made in One Factory" Matters for NZ Conditions
Why should a Bay of Plenty farmer or a Coromandel fishing crew care where a radio's PCB gets soldered? Because the testing regime built around that factory is what decides whether the radio still works after a season of salt spray and dust.
GME puts metal components through a dedicated salt fog chamber, exposing them to a salt-based alkaline solution to test corrosion resistance. That's a direct match for anything used on the water or within a few kilometres of it, which covers a fair chunk of the Bay of Plenty coastline. Hardware also goes through vibration and shock testing, water and dust ingress testing, UV exposure testing, and temperature and humidity testing, the same combination of stresses a radio sees bouncing around in a farm ute or sitting on a boat's dash in the sun.
Built to the Standard That Actually Applies Here
Every GME UHF CB radio is built to AS/NZS 4365, the joint Australia and New Zealand standard that sets minimum performance and testing requirements for UHF citizen band equipment. It's not a standard GME retrofits an existing design to pass. GME is on the committee's radar as one of the manufacturers the standard was written around, which is a different starting point to a generic imported radio that gets a compliance sticker applied after the fact.
None of this means GME gear is indestructible. It means it's been tested against the specific conditions New Zealand throws at it, rather than conditions from a market on the other side of the world.
Beyond UHF CB: What Else Comes Out of Winston Hills
UHF CB handhelds are what most people associate with GME, but the same Sydney factory also builds GME's VHF marine radios and its 406 MHz GPS emergency beacons, the kind that goes in a ditch bag or gets registered to a fishing boat.
GME's manufacturing capability extends further than most people realise. The company also produces secure, export-controlled electronics for defence applications, operating under Australia's ITAR and EAR export control frameworks, work it discusses openly through its own industry channels. We won't overstate what that means for a farm radio, but it does say something about the manufacturing discipline behind the brand.
Whether it's the UHF CB clipped to a dogman's belt or the EPIRB strapped inside a life jacket, there's a decent chance it rolled off the same production line in Sydney's west.

- Straightforward, no-fuss gear that works out of the box without programming a private channel plan
Look at Tait or Hytera Instead If You Need
A licensed commercial land mobile network with dedicated frequencies, a trunked or DMR digital fleet across multiple sites, or coverage engineered with repeaters for a large or complex property. That's a different job, and GME's UHF CB range was never designed to do it. Being upfront about that is part of giving you the right advice, not just the easiest sale.
