Land Search and Rescue New Zealand (LandSAR)

LandSAR volunteers never know when they'll be called out. Here's how Mobile Systems, as a Tait partner, equipped them with a genuinely rapid, grab-and-go communications solution.

LandSAR volunteers never know when they'll be called out. When they are, the last thing they need to worry about is whether their radio will actually work, or whether it's charged. As a Tait partner, Mobile Systems played a key role in equipping LandSAR teams with a genuinely rapid, grab-and-go communications solution, one they could trust completely when the callout came.

// Key Takeaways

  • LandSAR needed rugged, reliable portables that could be grabbed and deployed at a moment's notice, with no uncertainty about battery status.
  • The solution centred on Tait TP8100 portable radios paired with transportable chargers housed in a rugged Pelican case, built for genuinely rapid deployment.
  • The transportable charging setup let LandSAR keep cycling through batches of radio batteries continuously throughout an incident, not just before it.
  • This same rapidly deployable solution proved itself during the LandSAR response to the Christchurch earthquake, known as Operation West.
  • Mobile Systems continues to support LandSAR teams with genuine local service backing that national-level equipment alone can't provide.
01 Β· The Challenge

Ready to Grab and Go, Every Time

LandSAR New Zealand is the national volunteer organisation assisting Police and the public in both suburban and wilderness search and rescue operations, spread across more than 60 local groups nationwide, backed by specialist teams in search dog work, caving, alpine cliff rescue, and river SAR.

The nature of the work means volunteers never know when they'll be called out next. What they needed was communications equipment that could be grabbed and deployed instantly, genuinely rugged enough for the harsh environments LandSAR operates in, from steep alpine terrain to dense bush, with the ability to keep charging radio batteries continuously on-site during a drawn-out incident.

02 Β· The Solution

A Genuinely Rapid Deployment Kit

Mobile Systems, working with Tait, equipped LandSAR teams with tough Tait TP8100 portable radios paired with transportable chargers housed in a rugged Pelican case, built specifically for a rapidly deployable solution teams could rely on without question. Knowing their radios were charged and ready to go the moment a callout came in removed one more variable from an already unpredictable job.

The transportable charging setup meant LandSAR could continue cycling batches of radio batteries throughout an event, not just at the start, keeping teams equipped for incidents that stretch well beyond a single shift.

03 Β· Proven in the Field

Tested During the Christchurch Earthquake Response

The suitability of this rapidly deployable solution was proven during LandSAR's response to the Christchurch earthquake, known as Operation West. LandSAR provided crucial reconnaissance and reassurance to the public, along with genuine situational awareness for the Emergency Management team, exactly the kind of high-pressure, no-second-chances scenario this equipment was built for.

β€œThe safety of our volunteers when they're out in the field is a top priority for LandSAR. Having good radio communications is an integral part of our safety management system.” Harry Maher, CEO, LandSAR

Good radio communications are the backbone of any search operation. When messages get relayed quickly and reliably, and there's less chance of a message not getting through, that genuinely improves the odds of finding the lost, injured, or missing, and it keeps volunteers safer while they do it.

04 Β· Ongoing Support
