What is an LED, really, beyond the little light on your router that never seems to turn off? It's a small semiconductor chip that turns electricity directly into light, no filament, no gas, no moving parts. That simple fact is the reason LEDs have taken over everything from phone screens to the warning light bar on a forestry truck heading up the Kaimai Ranges.
Here's why it's worth understanding properly rather than just nodding along. That process is called electroluminescence, and it's the whole reason LEDs run cool and sip power compared with older bulbs.
The colour of the light depends on the specific semiconductor material used, not a coloured filter or gas. That's why LEDs come in genuinely pure reds, ambers, blues, and whites, and why manufacturers can build lights for a specific job, amber for warning, white for driving, without relying on tinted glass.
Q: Why do LEDs matter so much for vehicle and marine lighting specifically?
Picture an old incandescent bulb: a thin wire filament, heated until it glows, sitting inside a fragile glass envelope. Now put that on a tractor bouncing across a paddock, or a boat pounding through a chop off the Coromandel coast. It's not a fair fight.
LEDs have no filament to shake apart, which makes them far more resistant to vibration and shock, exactly the conditions that kill traditional bulbs fastest on work vehicles and vessels. They also run cooler, draw less power from an already-loaded vehicle electrical system, and switch on instantly at full brightness, which matters when a warning light needs to be seen immediately, not after a half-second warm-up.
Add a genuinely long working life and solid resistance to dust and moisture in well-built units, and it's easy to see why LED has become the default choice for anything bolted to a work vehicle or boat.
Q: What's the difference between a warning light bar and an LED driving light?
They look similar from a distance, but they do very different jobs, and mixing them up is a common, costly mistake.
A warning light bar, like the amber units in our Commander range, exists to be seen. It flashes or rotates to alert other road users to a hazard, a slow-moving vehicle, a stationary work site, a breakdown. It's about visibility to others, not lighting your own way.
An LED driving light, such as the Tomar units we stock, exists to help you see. It throws a solid, forward beam to supplement your vehicle's headlights in the dark, on a farm track, a forestry road, or an unlit yard. It's about your own visibility of what's ahead.
Get the two confused and you'll end up with a light that's brilliant at one job and useless at the other.
Q: Are LED warning light bars and driving lights actually legal to fit in NZ?
This is where a lot of good intentions go wrong, so it's worth getting right. Amber warning beacons in New Zealand are governed by the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004 and the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004. In short, an amber beacon can generally be fitted and used when a vehicle is stationary or moving slowly to warn other road users of a hazard, or when operating under an approved traffic management plan. Many professional units, including ones we stock, are built to the ECE R65 standard commonly referenced for this kind of warning lighting.
Additional driving lights and light bars used as extra high beam have their own rules too. They generally need to be fitted as a genuine pair (a single centred light bar doesn't count as a legal headlamp), must be wired so they only operate on high beam, and must not dazzle or distract other road users.
None of this is meant to put you off, professional gear fitted properly is common and entirely legal. It's simply worth checking the specifics for your vehicle and use case rather than assuming, particularly if the vehicle needs to pass a Warrant of Fitness or Certificate of Fitness inspection.
Q: What should I actually look for when choosing LED lighting for a work vehicle or vessel?
Once you know the legal basics, the buying decision comes down to a handful of practical questions.
- What's the job? Warning others, or lighting your own way. Pick the right category first.
- What conditions will it face? Look for a genuine IP rating for dust and water resistance, especially for anything going near salt spray on a boat.
- How is it mounted? Vibration on a tractor or a work ute is a different challenge to a static installation, and cheap mounts fail first.
- Does it need to be paired? Driving lights fitted as extra high beam need to go on as a matched pair, not a single unit.
A light that ticks these boxes will still be working properly in three years. One that doesn't will be back on the workshop bench within months.
Q: Is this something you need to think about, or can you just grab whatever's cheapest?
If your vehicle never leaves sealed roads and good lighting, you probably don't need to think much harder than your local parts shop's standard range.
It's worth getting proper advice if you're running vehicles or vessels in genuinely demanding conditions: forestry, construction, agriculture, maritime, or any site work where a hazard light or driving light failing at the wrong moment is a real safety issue, not just an inconvenience.
