A WiFi Speed Test NZ Businesses Can Actually Trust

WiFi speed test guide for NZ businesses: what the numbers mean, when it's your WiFi vs your internet vs cellular, and how to fix each.

Run a WiFi speed test the same way you'd check a radio channel: same time of day, same device, same spot, more than once. A single test tells you what your connection is doing right now. Three tests over a week tell you whether it's actually a problem or just a bad moment. Anything consistently under 25 Mbps download for a small office, or dropping out during video calls and EFTPOS transactions, means it's time to look past the router and at what's actually feeding it.

Why Your WiFi Test Keeps Giving You Different Numbers

Ever run a speed test twice in ten minutes and got two completely different results? That's not a faulty test. WiFi speed moves with how many devices are connected, how far you are from the router, what's between you and it (concrete walls and metal shelving are the worst offenders), and what everyone else on the network is doing at that exact moment.

A test in an empty office at 7am and the same test at 2pm with fifteen staff on video calls will never match. Both numbers are real. Neither one alone tells you the whole story.

What the Numbers Actually Mean for a Business

  • Download speed β€” how fast you pull data in. Matters for browsing, cloud software, video calls.
  • Upload speed β€” how fast you send data out. Matters for EFTPOS, cloud backups, uploading files, and video calls just as much as download.
  • Ping (latency) β€” the delay before data starts moving. High ping makes everything feel laggy even when your download number looks fine.
  • Jitter β€” how much that delay varies. High jitter is why a video call sounds fine one second and breaks up the next.

For most small-to-medium NZ businesses, 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload is a reasonable working minimum for a handful of staff on cloud tools and EFTPOS. Larger teams, heavier cloud use, or multiple EFTPOS terminals push that bar higher.

When It's Not the WiFi at All

This is the bit most speed test guides skip. A weak WiFi signal and a weak internet connection look identical to the person sitting at the desk, but they need completely different fixes.

  • If speed is bad everywhere in the building, even standing next to the router β€” the problem is upstream. That's your internet connection itself, not your WiFi. Worth checking whether your area's due an upgrade, or whether Starlink is a better fit if you're rural or on the edge of fibre coverage.
  • If speed is fine near the router but drops off in other rooms or floors β€” that's a WiFi coverage problem, not a speed problem. A WiFi mesh system spreads the same connection further and more evenly through the building.
  • If your mobile signal is the actual issue β€” dropped calls, poor 4G/5G for field staff or EFTPOS backup β€” that's a cellular problem, and no WiFi fix will touch it. That's what a cellular signal booster is for. Different problem, different product, worth not confusing the two.

Quick Steps to Test Properly

  1. Test at the same time each day for a few days, not just once.
  2. Test close to the router and again in your furthest work area.
  3. Test with as few other devices active as possible, then again during a normal busy period.
  4. Write the numbers down. A one-off test is a snapshot. A few tests over a week is a diagnosis.

Slow WiFi costs more than frustration. It's EFTPOS delays at the counter, dropped video calls with clients, and staff losing minutes every hour waiting on a spinning wheel. Once you know whether the problem is your connection, your coverage, or your cellular signal, the fix is usually straightforward. Guessing at it isn't.
