Why Sky View Matters More Than Anything Else
Starlink's dish needs a clear, largely unobstructed view of the sky to maintain a stable connection to the satellite constellation. Trees, buildings, and even seasonal foliage growth can degrade performance, sometimes gradually enough that you don't notice the cause until you check obstruction data or performance drops off noticeably.
Before choosing a mounting location, it's worth checking the sky view at different times of day, since shadows and obstruction angles shift as the sun and satellites move across the sky.
Roof, Pole and Portable Mounting
- Roof mounts: suit permanent installations where the roofline offers a genuinely clear sky view, generally the simplest option for a fixed residential or office site
- Pole mounts: useful where the roof itself is obstructed by trees or other structures, or where servicing the dish without roof access is preferable
- Portable and vehicle mounts: suited to mobile operations, temporary worksites, or vehicles that need connectivity on the move, with hardware chosen for the specific mobile use case
The right choice depends entirely on your specific site's obstructions and how permanent the installation needs to be, there's no universal best mount, only the one that gives your dish the clearest sky view for your situation.
Ethernet and Network Integration
Starlink's standard kit relies on WiFi from its own router, which works well for most households and small offices. An Ethernet adapter lets you hard-wire the connection directly into an existing network setup instead, useful where you already have wired infrastructure, need a more stable connection for specific equipment, or want to integrate Starlink into a broader business network rather than running it as a standalone WiFi system.
Why Professional Installation Matters
A DIY mount that looks fine on a calm day can fail in a genuine storm, and a dish mounted a metre lower or a few degrees off than it should be can quietly cost you performance you'll never trace back to the install. Professional installation secures the mount to suit your site's weather exposure and positions the dish for the clearest available sky view from day one.
Getting Installed with Mobile Systems
Mobile Systems Limited installs Starlink for NZ businesses from Mount Maunganui, matching the mounting option to your actual site conditions rather than defaulting to whatever's easiest.
