What Is Starlink?
Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX. Instead of relying on a handful of satellites parked far out in geostationary orbit, the way older satellite internet worked, Starlink uses a constellation of thousands of small satellites in low Earth orbit, much closer to the ground.
That single design choice is why Starlink feels genuinely different from the satellite internet people remember being frustratingly slow. Closer satellites mean a shorter round trip for your data, which means lower latency, the delay between sending a request and getting a response. For anyone who's tried a video call over old-school satellite internet and watched everyone talk over each other because of the lag, this is the actual fix.
How Does Starlink Actually Work?
Here's the short version, and then the slightly longer version for anyone who wants to actually understand what's happening on their roof.
The Dish: No Moving Parts, Just Clever Engineering
The Starlink terminal, commonly called "Dishy," uses what's known as a phased array antenna. Rather than physically rotating to track a satellite the way an old TV satellite dish would, it's packed with over a thousand tiny antenna elements that steer the signal electronically, adjusting the timing of the signal across the array to point the beam in a specific direction. No motor grinding away, nothing to wear out mechanically. That's genuinely important, because a satellite crosses the sky and out of range in just a few minutes, and the dish has to smoothly hand off to the next one without dropping the connection.
Getting Your Data to the Internet
Once your data reaches a satellite, it needs to get to the actual internet. Older Starlink satellites relayed data straight down to a ground station nearby. Newer satellites carry laser inter-satellite links, genuine operational hardware now, not an experimental feature, that let data hop between satellites in orbit before coming down to a ground station wherever one happens to be available. This is exactly why Starlink can offer coverage over oceans and remote regions with no ground infrastructure nearby, including plenty of NZ's more isolated corners.

How Big Is the Network Now?
As of mid-2026, there are roughly 10,000 to 10,700 Starlink satellites in orbit, a figure that changes weekly as SpaceX continues launching new batches and retiring older ones. That's a dramatic jump from the network's early years, and it's a big part of why coverage and reliability have improved so much since Starlink first launched in NZ back in March 2021.

What's worth knowing here is the broad shape of it: Starlink in NZ splits into Standard (residential, fixed location), Priority (business, faster and more consistent under load), and Mobile plans (Roam or Maritime, for anything that moves). Using a fixed Standard plan for a boat or vehicle isn't just against the terms of service, the standard dish genuinely isn't built to handle constant motion, and you'll get an unreliable signal for your trouble.
Is Starlink Right for You?
Starlink solves a genuine problem for a lot of NZ operators, but it's worth being honest about where it earns its keep and where it doesn't.
- Good fit: rural properties and farms beyond fibre or reliable fixed wireless, construction sites needing broadband before permanent infrastructure exists, boats and vehicles wanting connectivity offshore or off-grid, and businesses wanting a genuine backup connection if their primary link drops.
- Worth a second thought: sites where you genuinely need voice-grade radio communication with guaranteed group calling, since Starlink is a broadband link, not a replacement for two-way radio safety communications. The two do different jobs and often sit alongside each other, not instead of each other.
