Both UHF and VHF have licence-free public options and licensed commercial options, and the choice affects cost, privacy and reliability regardless of which band you pick.

The Personal Radio Service (PRS) UHF CB band offers 80 channels under a General User Radio Licence (GURL), free and requiring no application, but capped at 5 watts and shared with anyone else nearby.
