UHF and VHF: The Basic Physics
UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and VHF (Very High Frequency) are two different slices of the radio spectrum, and the difference that matters most is wavelength. VHF's longer wavelength travels efficiently over open, unobstructed ground, following the curve of the earth reasonably well. UHF's shorter wavelength doesn't travel as far in open country, but it handles solid obstacles, buildings, steel, dense foliage, far better, effectively bouncing around them rather than being blocked outright.
Neither band is objectively better. They're suited to different physical environments, and picking the wrong one for your site is the single most common mistake in a two-way radio purchase.

Where a site genuinely has both dense obstacles and long open stretches, the honest answer is that a single band will always be a compromise somewhere. A site survey, checking real signal behaviour at the locations your team actually works, settles this far more reliably than assuming from the terrain type alone.

What If You Need Both?
Some operations genuinely span both environments, a forestry company with bush blocks and open skid sites, or a farm with both hill country and marine access. Since UHF and VHF radios can't communicate directly, the practical options are running two separate fleets for two distinct zones, or standardising on the band that covers the majority of actual working time and accepting a compromise at the margins.
There's no universal right answer here, it depends on where your team spends the most time and where the safety-critical communication actually needs to happen.
