Which Icom Is Right For The Job?
Icom's range spans further than most brands we stock, marine VHF and MF/HF, commercial land two-way radios in both analogue and digital, aviation, UHF CB, a scanner, and network infrastructure. This guide breaks it down by what actually matters, marine or land, handheld or fixed-mount, analogue or digital, so you can find the right model without wading through spec sheets.
Browse the full Icom range βMarine, land, or aviation?
Icom's marine gear needs different certification (DSC/GMDSS) to its land-based commercial radios, they're not interchangeable.
Handheld, or fixed-mount?
Handhelds go with the person or in a tender. Fixed-mount units wire into a vehicle or vessel for more power and range.
Analogue, or digital (IDAS)?
On Icom's land radios these are genuinely different model numbers, not a setting, F1000/F2000 are analogue, F1100D/F2100D are digital.
Which marine safety features matter?
DSC, AIS and GPS turn a marine radio into a genuine safety system, not every model carries all three.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence for my Icom radio in New Zealand?
It depends on the radio. The IC-41PRO UHF CB operates under the free General User Radio Licence (GURL), no application needed. Commercial land radios and marine VHF operate on protected frequencies requiring a licence from Radio Spectrum Management, and marine DSC use also needs an MMSI number for your vessel. Mobile Systems can manage the RSM application and correct programming on your behalf.
What's the real difference between VHF and UHF?
VHF signals travel further in open, flat terrain with few obstructions, a strong choice for marine, farming and forestry. UHF signals penetrate buildings, concrete and dense bush more effectively, making it the standard for construction sites, warehouses and event management.
Which Icom land radios are actually digital?
The genuinely digital models are the F1100D, F2100D, F52D, F62D, F3400D, F4400D, and the F5130D/F6130D, F5330D/F6330D and F5400D/F6400D mobile range, all running Icom's IDAS digital platform. The F1000 and F2000 that share a similar name are analogue-only, not a lower digital tier, a genuinely different product.
What do DSC and AIS actually do on a marine radio?
DSC (Digital Selective Calling) is a one-touch distress alert that broadcasts your vessel's identity and, with GPS, your exact position to every DSC-equipped radio and shore station in range. AIS (Automatic Identification System) broadcasts and receives vessel identity, speed and heading, effectively a digital picture of nearby traffic. Not every Icom marine model carries both, check the specific radio before assuming the feature is included.
What ruggedness rating should I look for?
IP67 is the realistic baseline for a handheld, fully dust-tight and able to survive submersion in one metre of water for 30 minutes. Some fixed-mount marine models go further to IPX8, rated for deeper or longer submersion. Match the rating to how the radio will actually be used before assuming any waterproof claim covers your conditions.
