VHF Digital Portable Radio, 136-174MHz, No Keypad

This is the no-keypad (NKP) R5 in the VHF band. Want a display and keypad? See the R5 VHF limited-keypad (LKP) model.

Overview

The Motorola MOTOTRBO R5 VHF is a tough, compact digital radio built for teams who just need to pick it up and talk. AI-trained noise suppression keeps voices clear over machinery and crowds, and the IP67 build shrugs off dust, rain and the odd dunking. VHF suits open country, farms, forestry and marine work, where signals need to carry across open ground. We program every R5 to your channel plan before it leaves our Mount Maunganui workshop.

Key Features

  • AI-trained noise suppression means your voice comes through clearly over machinery, traffic and crowds, for crews working in loud environments.
  • IP67 rating means the radio is dust-tight and survives immersion, for teams working in rain, mud and dust.
  • Up to 32 hours of battery life, depending on battery and usage, means a full shift and more on one charge, for long days and multi-shift operations.
  • 5W VHF across 136-174MHz means strong coverage across open ground, for rural, forestry and open-country work.
  • No-keypad design means fewer buttons to fumble with gloves on, for users who just need push-to-talk and a channel knob.
  • Digital and analogue signalling means it works alongside older analogue radios while you move to DMR, for fleets upgrading in stages.
  • IMPRES battery support means smarter charging and longer battery life, for fleets managing lots of radios.

Applications

  • Agriculture and horticulture
  • Forestry crews
  • Marine and port operations

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Motorola R5 VHF waterproof?
The R5 VHF is rated IP67, which means it's dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. It's built for rain, mud and wash-down conditions on site.

Do I need a licence to use the R5 VHF in New Zealand?
You do need a licence. The R5 runs on licensed VHF frequencies, not the general user licence that covers UHF CB. We can arrange channel licensing and program the radio to your channel plan as part of the job.

How long does the R5 battery last?
The R5 runs for up to 32 hours on a charge, depending on the battery fitted and how heavily it's used. A spare PMNN4889 battery covers back-to-back shifts.

Should I choose UHF or VHF?
Choose the band your existing licence and radios use, since UHF and VHF radios can't talk to each other. For a new system, UHF generally suits built-up sites and buildings, while VHF suits open country and long rural distances.

Does the R5 have GPS, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?
The R5 sold in New Zealand doesn't include GPS, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, on either the no-keypad or keypad model. If you need those features, step up to the Motorola R7 or DP3661e.

The video shows the R5 at work: loud, clear audio with background noise filtered out, simple controls that work with gloves on, and a rugged IP67 build that copes with knocks, drops and wet conditions.
