Overview

The COL3 is a "cut to frequency" collinear antenna covering the 144-175MHz VHF band, electrically identical to the COL17 but built with a ruggedised heavy-duty black fibreglass radome for use in the most extreme climatic conditions. The radome design (originally engineered as sailboard mast material) is immensely strong, and its black colouring maximises solar heat retention, significantly aiding ice shedding.

The antenna is internally DC grounded for lightning protection and reduction of static noise, with drainage vents at the base to prevent condensation build-up. The alodine finish of the aluminium mounting tube provides a conductive surface ensuring effective earthing when mounted.
