The R7 uses front and rear microphones together with Adaptive Dual Microphone Noise Suppression, which filters out background noise rather than just turning the volume up over it. Automatic Acoustic Feedback Suppression stops nearby radios from squealing into each other when your team is working in a tight space like a loading dock or a plant room. Intelligent Audio then adjusts speaker volume automatically as background noise changes, so nobody's fumbling with a volume dial mid-job.
None of that matters if the words never reach the other radio in the first place, which is exactly the gap this feature set is built to close.

Motorola runs the R7 through an Accelerated Life Test, simulating five years of hard daily use before a single unit reaches the market. That's a genuinely different bar to a consumer radio that's simply weather-resistant.
It carries IP68 and IP66 ratings, meaning it's dust-tight and can survive full submersion in up to 2 metres of water for 2 hours, as well as direct hits from high-pressure water jets. It's also tested to MIL-STD-810H, the military durability standard, and the screen is built to survive repeated drops onto concrete.
An Unusual Detail Worth Knowing
The housing material is specifically designed to resist disinfectants and decontamination chemicals, a detail Motorola added for healthcare and industrial buyers who need to wipe radios down between uses. If that's not relevant to your site, it's a nice-to-have rather than a reason to buy.
Connectivity and Battery Life That Matches a Real Shift
The R7 runs built-in Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5.0 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.2, with WPA3 security compliance. In practice that means over-the-air programming and firmware updates, so your fleet can be kept current without pulling every radio in for a cable connection.
Battery life is where you need to read the fine print rather than the headline number. Fitted with the smaller 2200 mAh slim battery, you're looking at around 19 to 20 hours. Step up to the 2850 mAh pack and it's closer to 25 to 26 hours. The largest 3200 mAh HazLoc battery, the one used in intrinsically safe configurations, gets you to roughly 28 to 29 hours. "Up to 28 hours" is a real figure, but only with the largest battery fitted, not as standard across every R7 sold.

Licensing an R7 in New Zealand

The R7 is a commercial DMR radio, which means it operates under an individual RSM land mobile licence, not the free general user licence that covers UHF CB handhelds. You'll need your frequencies allocated and your radios programmed to them before they're legal to use.
This isn't a reason to avoid the R7, it's just part of the total cost of getting one working properly.
