Why LED Beats Older Light Bar Technology
Older rotating beacons and halogen light bars have real weaknesses that matter on a work vehicle: slow warm-up, fragile filaments, and a hard failure point where the light simply stops working with no warning. LED solves each of these in a way that's genuinely relevant to fleet and safety vehicles, not just a marketing line.
- Instant response: LEDs reach full brightness in under a microsecond, which matters when a hazard warning needs to be visible the moment it's switched on, not a second later.
- Built for cycling: constant on-off use, exactly what a hazard beacon or indicator does all day, degrades fluorescent and HID lighting fast. LEDs are designed for it.
- Shock and vibration resistance: as solid-state components, LEDs handle the constant rattle of a ute tray or work truck far better than a fragile filament or gas-filled bulb.
- Slow, predictable failure: LEDs typically dim gradually over years rather than failing outright without warning, giving you time to plan replacement rather than discovering a dead beacon mid-shift.
- Lifespan: a well-built LED light bar can run for tens of thousands of hours, several times longer than halogen equivalents, which is where the real payback shows up. For fleet and work vehicles, the maintenance and replacement savings over the unit's working life matter more than the running cost alone.
None of this matters, though, if the light bar you fit isn't one you're legally entitled to run. That's the part worth getting right before you buy.
Who's Actually Allowed to Use an Amber Beacon in NZ
Under the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004, a beacon must be approved before it can legally be fitted and used. The colour you're permitted to run depends entirely on who you are and what you're doing, not personal preference.

Amber is the colour most work and commercial vehicles will use, but it still has to fall into one of three legitimate categories: operating under a traffic management plan approved by a road controlling authority, complying with the Vehicle Dimensions and Mass Rule 2016 for oversize or overweight loads, or warning other road users of a genuine hazard while the vehicle is stationary or being driven slowly. A beacon fitted just because it looks the part, with no approved purpose, isn't compliant, regardless of colour.
Getting Your Light Bar Approved and Fitted Correctly
Two requirements matter most once you've established you're entitled to run an amber beacon.
- Approval: the beacon itself needs to be approved for fitting to your specific vehicle. This isn't automatic just because a light bar is sold in NZ.
- Visibility distance: where the rule applies, the beacon's light must be clearly visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle for a distance of not less than 100 metres.
Positioning matters for the same reason. A light bar mounted too low, obscured by other equipment, or angled poorly can technically meet the colour requirement while failing the practical job of being seen. If your vehicle tows an agricultural trailer or has an implement fitted that could obscure the main beacon, the rule requires an additional illuminated amber beacon on the trailer or implement itself, not just the vehicle.
Driving Lights and Grill Lights: A Different Set of Rules
Additional main beam headlamps, commonly called driving lights, sit under different rules than warning beacons. They must be white or amber in colour, the same requirement that applies to main beam headlamps, dipped beam headlamps, and front fog lamps generally.
A few specifics worth knowing if you're adding driving lights or grill lights to a work vehicle:
- You can fit additional main beam headlamps as long as you don't exceed the maximum number permitted for that vehicle type.
- HID conversion kits, where an HID bulb and ballast are fitted into an original halogen headlamp housing with no change to the lens or reflector, are illegal on NZ roads.
- A complete halogen headlamp unit can be legally replaced with a complete HID unit, but only if the replacement complies with approved standards.
- Front fog lamps must also be white or amber, and should only be used when visibility is genuinely reduced, not as permanent extra lighting.
