UHF or VHF: The One Decision You Can't Undo
Why does this matter more than almost anything else on the spec sheet? Because a UHF radio and a VHF radio will never talk to each other, no matter the brand, no matter the price. Get this call wrong on a fleet purchase and you've got two separate systems that can't communicate, full stop.
UHF (Ultra High Frequency) sits between roughly 400 and 520 MHz. The shorter wavelength is better at bending around and pushing through solid obstacles, buildings, machinery, dense bush, which is why UHF dominates construction sites, warehouses, forestry crews and event teams working around structures and vegetation.
VHF (Very High Frequency) runs lower, generally 136 to 174 MHz. The longer wavelength travels further over open, unobstructed ground, which is exactly why it's the standard for marine radios and why it suits farms, large open worksites and coastal operations where there's nothing much in the way.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
If your team works around buildings, machinery, or thick bush, go UHF. If your team works across open paddocks, water, or clear line-of-sight terrain, go VHF. Mixed environment? UHF is usually the safer general-purpose pick, since most NZ worksites have at least some obstruction to deal with.

Power and Range: What Wattage Actually Buys You
Ever seen a radio box claiming 25 kilometres of range and wondered if that's realistic? It isn't, not on a real worksite. That figure is measured under perfect conditions: a clear day, no obstructions, both radios on high ground with a direct line of sight. Your actual worksite has none of that.
Most commercial handheld radios sold in NZ run between 1 and 5 watts. More power generally means a stronger signal that pushes further and penetrates obstacles better, but wattage isn't the only variable. Terrain, buildings, weather, and even the height of the person holding the radio all affect real-world range.
Realistic Range Expectations
As a rough guide, a 1-watt handheld might comfortably cover a single building or a short outdoor distance with some obstructions. A full 4 to 5-watt commercial radio extends that considerably further, and is the standard choice for construction sites, larger farms, and multi-building operations.
For sites where even 5 watts isn't enough, a repeater is the answer, not a stronger handheld. A repeater picks up a weaker signal and rebroadcasts it at higher power from a fixed, elevated location, which is how large sites and multi-storey buildings get consistent coverage without dead zones.
Durability: The IP Rating That's Actually Worth Paying For
What happens the first time a radio gets dropped in a puddle on a wet Tuesday? If it isn't properly rated, that's the end of it. Durability isn't a nice-to-have on a NZ worksite, it's the difference between a radio that lasts years and one you're replacing every few months.
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating tells you exactly what a radio can survive. The first digit covers dust resistance, the second covers water. An IP67 rating means the radio is completely dust-tight and can survive being submerged in one metre of water for up to 30 minutes, a realistic minimum for construction, forestry, agriculture and marine-adjacent work in NZ conditions.

If your crew works around explosive atmospheres, fuel depots, gas facilities, grain silos, an intrinsically safe (IS) rated radio is a separate, non-negotiable requirement. A standard radio, however rugged, can become an ignition source in that kind of environment.
Licensing in NZ: PRS, GURL and RSM Explained

New Zealand's radio spectrum is managed by Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) under the Radiocommunications Act 1989. UHF CB and the Personal Radio Service (PRS)

The catch is exactly that: it's shared. Everyone else in your area with a UHF CB radio is potentially on the same channels, and in built-up areas that can mean genuine congestion and a lack of privacy for anything sensitive.
When a Licensed Frequency Makes Sense
For a business that needs a clean, private, interference-free channel, an individual RSM licence is usually the better investment. It gives you exclusive use of a specific frequency in your operational area, which matters when clear communication is tied to safety or when you simply can't afford to share airtime with a stranger's UHF CB chatter.

Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) radios sit outside this system entirely. They run on the mobile network rather than a licensed radio channel, so there's no RSM fee, just an ongoing data plan, which is worth knowing if your team is spread across a wide area with good cellular coverage.
Digital or Analogue: Is DMR Worth the Upgrade?
Still running analogue and wondering if digital is just marketing spin? It isn't. Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) is a genuine technical step up, not a repackaged version of what you already have, and understanding the difference helps you decide if it's worth paying for.
Analogue radio transmits your voice as a continuous wave. As you move further from the source, that signal degrades gradually, getting crackly and quiet before eventually disappearing. DMR converts your voice into digital data first. The result is audio that stays clear right up until the edge of range, then drops out cleanly rather than fading into static.

Most current digital radios also run in mixed mode, meaning they'll talk to your existing analogue fleet while you migrate. That matters if you're not in a position to replace every radio at once. You don't need to choose between old and new on day one, you can move at your own pace.
