What Is a Variable Message Sign?

A variable message sign (VMS), also called a changeable or electronic message sign, is a roadside sign that displays customisable messages to drivers. Rather than a fixed message printed on a static board, a VMS can be updated to warn of congestion, roadworks, crashes, lane closures, weather hazards, or event traffic, whatever's relevant on the day.

In New Zealand, VMS trailers are widely used by traffic management companies, event organisers, and contractors to keep road users informed and safe during temporary changes to normal traffic conditions.

How VMS Trailers Are Used

A typical message on a VMS trailer includes some combination of:

• A problem statement, such as roadworks, a crash, or a stalled vehicle
• A location statement, showing where the issue is
• An effect statement, such as a lane closure or expected delay
• An action statement, telling drivers what to do (merge, slow down, use an alternative route)

Common uses across New Zealand include:

• Roadworks and construction zone warnings
• Event traffic management, from sports days to concerts
• Temporary speed restrictions
• Detours and lane closures
• General safety messaging during high-traffic periods

Modern LED Technology

Most current VMS units use LED displays, which offer far more flexibility than older technologies like rotating-drum or fibre-optic displays. Modern LED signs can show multiple lines of text, adjust brightness for day and night visibility, and in some cases display simple graphics alongside text.

Trailer-mounted VMS units can be programmed locally via a control panel, or remotely via a cellular connection, letting an operator update the message without needing to physically visit the site.
