Iridium's advantage is its moving constellation. If a peak blocks the signal, another satellite is usually along within minutes. That makes it the stronger choice in Fiordland valleys, the Southern Alps, or the Southern Ocean. Inmarsat's fixed equatorial satellites give a very stable signal across most of New Zealand, but the signal comes from the northern sky, so anything blocking that direction, a steep south-facing slope, dense bush, can be a genuine limitation.

Choose Starlink if
- You need broadband-class internet at a remote site, vehicle, or vessel
- Your team runs cloud software, video calls, or file transfer beyond cellular range
- You have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky at the install location
Choose Iridium or Inmarsat if
- Your primary need is guaranteed voice contact or emergency SOS, not data
- Your team works in genuinely remote terrain, including deep valleys or offshore waters
- You need to meet a lone worker safety obligation under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
Why Layering Beats Picking One
Relying on a single satellite system for everything is a genuine operational risk. The strongest approach for serious NZ operations, forestry crews, remote construction, commercial fishing vessels, is usually a hybrid: Starlink for primary data, and an Iridium or Inmarsat device as a dedicated, independent voice and emergency lifeline.
If your data connection goes down, your team still has a guaranteed way to call for help. If your phone can't reach a satellite from a blocked position, your Starlink-fed Wi-Fi and cloud systems keep the rest of the operation running. Neither one is a substitute for the other.
