Start With Your Environment, Not the Spec Sheet
Every generic radio guide leads with power output and channel count. We'd argue that's backwards. The single biggest factor in whether a radio actually works for you is where it's being used, and that decision happens before you look at a single spec.
UHF: Built for Obstacles
UHF (Ultra High Frequency) signals are shorter wavelengths that bounce and penetrate through solid materials better than VHF. That makes UHF the right call for construction sites, warehouses, multi-storey buildings, or anywhere with concrete, steel and awkward corners between the people talking to each other.
VHF: Built for Open Ground
VHF (Very High Frequency) signals carry further over clear, open terrain, which is exactly why farmers, forestry crews working open blocks, and marine operators tend to reach for VHF. Where there's nothing much in the way, VHF's longer wavelength genuinely goes further on the same power.
Get this one decision wrong and no amount of extra wattage fixes it. A UHF radio doesn't magically become a VHF radio because you turned the power up, and vice versa.
Handheld, Mobile or Base Station?
Once you know your frequency band, the next question is simple: how is this radio actually going to live in someone's day?
- Handheld radios go where people go. They're the right choice for foot crews, site supervisors, security staff and anyone who needs to move around while staying in contact.
- Mobile (vehicle-mounted) radios draw power straight from the vehicle's battery, which means more consistent output and generally better range than a handheld running on its own battery. If your team spends most of the day driving between sites, a mobile unit paired with a proper external antenna genuinely outperforms a handheld clipped to the dash.
- Base stations and repeaters extend coverage across a fixed site or difficult terrain, taking a signal that would otherwise drop out and relaying it further. Worth considering if your site has known dead zones that no amount of handheld wattage will fix.
Plenty of operations end up using all three together, handhelds for people on foot, mobiles in the utes and trucks, and a repeater tying the whole site together. There's no rule that says you have to pick just one.
Analogue or Digital: What Actually Changes
This is the decision that genuinely changes how a radio behaves, not just what it costs.

Analogue isn't obsolete. For a small team doing simple push-to-talk work, it's still a perfectly sound, affordable choice. Digital earns its higher price tag once you're managing multiple teams, need genuinely clear audio at the edge of coverage, or want features like GPS tracking and text messaging that analogue simply can't offer.

Licensing in NZ: What You're Actually Allowed to Use
This is the part most buying guides skip entirely, and it's exactly where people get caught out.
- Licence-free UHF CB (477MHz): covered by a General User Radio Licence, no fee, no paperwork, provided the radio is type-approved for NZ and carries the RCM compliance mark. Fine for most recreational and light commercial use.
- Licensed commercial radio: requires an individual RSM frequency licence with an annual fee, giving you a private channel free from outside interference. As of 1 July 2026, a standard RSM licence is $190 a year, with land mobile licences from $800 up to $1,800 depending on how many repeater sites you need.
The practical difference is simple: UHF CB is a shared public channel, fine for casual chat but prone to congestion in busy areas. A licensed commercial channel is yours alone. A good supplier handles the RSM application as part of the sale, so you're not navigating the paperwork solo.
Is a Commercial Radio Right for You?
Not every job needs a licensed, top-tier digital radio. Here's an honest read on where you probably sit.
- Small team, casual use, single site: licence-free UHF CB is usually all you need. No ongoing cost, no paperwork.
- Growing team, busy shared channel, or safety-critical work: a licensed commercial radio removes the interference risk that comes with a public channel.
- Multiple crews, need GPS or messaging, working across a large or awkward site: digital DMR earns its cost here, and probably a repeater too.
- Hazardous environment (fuel, gas, certain industrial sites): intrinsically safe rated hardware is worth a direct conversation before you buy anything off a shelf.
If you're still not sure which bracket you fall into, that's a genuinely normal place to be, and exactly the conversation a proper radio supplier should be happy to have with you before you spend a cent.
