MOTOTRBO is Motorola's Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) platform, the digital engine behind most of the commercial two-way radios you'll see on NZ construction sites, farms and transport fleets. Within that platform, models split into two generations worth knowing about.

If you're starting from scratch, the R series is the natural starting point, since it's Motorola's current generation and covers the same range of budgets and toughness levels the older DP series did. If you already run DP radios and just need more units, staying within that family keeps your fleet consistent and avoids mixing accessories, batteries and chargers across two different ecosystems.

R7: The Flagship for Demanding Sites
The R7 is Motorola's top-tier MOTOTRBO handheld, built for teams where a radio failure genuinely isn't an option. It carries an IP68 rating, fully dust-tight and rated for continuous submersion beyond the standard IP67 benchmark, and is available in both VHF (136-174MHz) and UHF (400-527MHz), so it fits whichever frequency your operation is licensed for.
Two things set the R7 apart from the rest of the range:
- TIA-hardened variants: built to US TIA military-grade standards for extreme drop, dust, vibration and temperature resistance, worth the extra cost for genuinely harsh sites.
- Intrinsically safe options: an IECEx/ATEX-rated battery is available for the R7, meaning it can be used safely in potentially explosive atmospheres, relevant for sites like fuel depots, gas facilities or certain industrial processing plants.
The R7 also comes in keypad (Premium) and no-keypad (Enable) configurations. The keypad version supports full menu navigation and text messaging; the no-keypad version keeps things simpler for teams that only need reliable push-to-talk voice. If your operation runs anything close to mission-critical, hazardous, or extreme-conditions work, the R7 is the model built for it.
R5 and R2: Right-Sized for Lighter Operations
R5: The Practical Middle Ground
The R5 carries an IP67 rating, fully dust-tight and able to survive brief submersion, a genuine step down from the R7's IP68 but still solidly rugged for most commercial and industrial use. It's the sensible choice when your team needs reliable digital communication and real durability, but doesn't face the extreme conditions that justify the R7's premium.
R2: The Entry Point
The R2 is where MOTOTRBO becomes genuinely accessible, priced well below the R5 and R7 while still delivering the core benefits of digital radio: clearer audio, better battery efficiency, and access to MOTOTRBO's data features. It's a strong fit for lighter-duty commercial use, retail, hospitality, smaller worksites, or any team that needs a step up from licence-free UHF CB without needing the ruggedness of the higher tiers.
The right call between the three usually comes down to one honest question: what actually happens if a radio gets dropped, soaked, or knocked around on a bad day? If the answer is "not much," the R2 or R5 will do the job for considerably less than an R7.
DP Series: Still a Solid Workhorse
The DP series, including the DP2400 and DP3441, remains available and genuinely capable hardware. These aren't discontinued relics, they're an established platform with a strong track record across NZ manufacturing plants, construction crews and transport fleets, and they're still fully supported with batteries, accessories and servicing.
The main reason to choose DP over R series in 2026 is fleet consistency: if you're already running DP2400s or DP3441s and need to add a handful more units, staying within the same family means your existing batteries, chargers and accessories keep working across the whole fleet, and your team doesn't need to learn a new interface. For a fresh deployment with no existing fleet to match, the R series is generally the better starting point.
