Planning the Install Before You Touch a Drill
Five minutes of planning saves an afternoon of redoing work. Before anything gets mounted, work out where four things are going: the main unit (if you're fitting an XRS Connect model with a separate hidden body), the control head or handheld mic, the antenna, and the cable run connecting them all.
- Confirm you can reach a clean 12V or 24V feed without an excessively long cable run
- Identify a genuine bare-metal grounding point on the chassis, not just a convenient bolt

- Plan the mic and coax cable path away from other wiring looms and moving parts like door hinges or pedals
Powering the Radio Correctly
Where you draw power from matters more than most people expect. An accessory circuit or a tap off another device's wiring can introduce voltage drops and electrical noise that shows up as static or reduced range, even though the radio itself is fine.
- Run a dedicated cable to the battery. Direct-to-battery wiring gives the cleanest, most stable power source.
- Fit an inline fuse close to the battery, not at the radio end, so the entire cable run is protected.
- Use appropriately rated cable for the current draw and cable length, undersized wiring causes voltage drop under transmit load specifically.
- Secure the power cable away from exhaust heat, moving parts, and sharp edges that could chafe through the insulation over time.
Antenna Placement and Cable Routing
Antenna position genuinely changes performance, not just aesthetics. A centre-roof mount on a metal surface gives the most even coverage in every direction. Where that's not practical, a bull bar or mirror mount works, provided you're using a ground-independent antenna designed for that position.
Once the antenna's mounted, take care routing the coaxial cable:
- Avoid kinking the cable or running it in a tight bend, both degrade signal quality
- Keep it separated from other vehicle wiring where practical, to reduce interference
- Coil any excess cable into a loose, large loop rather than a tight bundle
- Secure the run at intervals so it can't rub, snag, or work loose over time
Mounting the Control Head and Mic
The control head or handheld mic needs to sit somewhere you can genuinely reach it without taking your eyes off the road for long. Under the dash, on a centre console mount, or in a purpose-built bracket are the usual options, and the mounting bracket should hold the unit securely enough that it won't rattle loose over rough terrain.
For XRS Connect models with a separate hidden main unit, tuck the body away somewhere protected, under a seat, behind the dash, or inside the centre console, and run the multipin cable to the visible control head or mic cleanly, ideally through existing factory grommets rather than a new hole through the firewall.
Testing Before You Call It Done
A radio that transmits fine sitting in the driveway can still have problems that only show up moving, over distance, or with the engine running. Before you consider the install finished:
- Test with the engine running, some interference only appears once the alternator and other electronics are active
- Have a genuine two-way conversation over real distance, not just a quick radio check nearby
- Check the antenna SWR if you have access to a meter, confirming the antenna and cable are properly matched
- Confirm the mic clips or clamps securely and doesn't rattle over rough road surfaces
