Mountain Radio Service (MRS)
Mountain Radio Service is a high-frequency (HF) radio network that lets trampers, hunters and field parties communicate with a volunteer base station operator, a genuinely New Zealand solution built over decades by regional groups covering the whole country.
You're supplied with a radio transceiver and a wire aerial to set up at camp. Daily scheds, scheduled contact times, are used to pass on weather, location and your intended route to the base station, so if you go quiet, someone already knows roughly where you were headed.
Advantages and Disadvantages
- Advantage: radios are compact, lightweight and inexpensive to hire, and reception isn't blocked by terrain the way line-of-sight systems can be.
- Advantage: route details logged at base stations during scheds can genuinely speed up a search if something goes wrong.
- Disadvantage: the long wire aerial, often around 40 metres, has to be fully run out and raised, which can be a real problem for an injured solo tramper.
- Disadvantage: the signal is subject to static from thunderstorms, and communication is generally only possible at scheduled times, not on demand.
How to Use It Properly
- Study the information from your regional MRS and know current sched times and channels before you leave.
- Run out the full aerial length and raise the centre as high as you safely can.
- Have a pen and paper ready, and keep messages concise and planned.
- Carry spare batteries. Signal is often better after dark.
DOC Hut Radios
Some Department of Conservation alpine huts have a radio system installed, giving trampers a way to reach the closest DOC visitor centre or duty officer directly from the hut. Coverage varies significantly by hut and region, so this is a genuine bonus rather than something to plan a trip around.
Contact your nearest DOC visitor centre before you go for detailed, current information on whether a specific hut or area has this service, since it changes as huts are upgraded or decommissioned.
Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs)
A PLB is a small emergency distress beacon that, when activated, transmits a 406 MHz signal to the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system. Cospas-Sarsat relays the alert, including your GPS position on modern units, to Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ), which triggers a rescue response. PLBs are for genuinely life-threatening situations only.
The older 121.5 MHz beacon type is now obsolete for this purpose. Satellites stopped monitoring that frequency for distress signals back in 2009, so any genuine PLB you buy or hire today should be a 406 MHz model, and nothing else is worth carrying.

Advantages and Disadvantages
- Advantage: units are compact, lightweight and relatively affordable to buy or hire, with detection available day and night on an internationally recognised distress frequency.
- Advantage: no set-up beyond activation is required, which makes a PLB a solid choice for a solo tramper. Most modern 406 MHz units are GPS-capable, giving rescuers a precise location.
- Disadvantage: a PLB needs a reasonably clear view of the sky, so it's less effective in deep valleys and gorges.
- Disadvantage: the signal is generally one-way, so you often won't know for certain your alert has been received, and false or non-urgent activation ties up resources needed for a genuine emergency elsewhere.
How to Use It Properly
- Check battery status before every trip, even on units with a long-life battery.
- Extend any aerial fully and activate with as clear a view of the sky as possible, avoiding deep gorges or heavy foliage.
- Do not turn it off once activated, and stay put so rescuers can find you.
- If it's a false alarm, contact RCCNZ or the Police immediately to cancel the alert.
Satellite Phones
A satellite phone works much like a cell phone, but connects through a satellite network rather than ground-based towers, so it gets a signal almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky. Iridium's low Earth orbit (LEO) network is the most common choice for backcountry New Zealand use, since its satellites pass overhead constantly rather than sitting fixed above the equator.
Advantages and Disadvantages
- Advantage: genuine two-way voice communication, not a one-way alert, with many devices also supporting text messaging.
- Advantage: compact and offering widespread coverage well beyond cellular range.
- Disadvantage: still needs a clear, broad view of the sky, so reception drops in confined gorges, dense bush or heavy rain.
- Disadvantage: hardware and airtime cost more than a PLB, which is worth weighing against how often you'd actually use the two-way capability.

Cell Phones
Cell phones are compact, lightweight, and give two-way communication with anyone, including 111 services, wherever there's coverage. The catch is that cellular networks are built around population centres and main highways, not backcountry terrain.
Coverage in South Island mountain valleys and isolated North Island backcountry areas remains genuinely limited, and you'll usually need line of sight and proximity to a cell site to get anything at all. Don't assume reliable communication in most mountain areas, especially river valleys. Open mountain or ridge tops are the best places to try, and conserving battery matters if a signal is unlikely.

Every communication system here has a genuine limitation. The safest approach is to carry at least two different types of device, and make sure everyone in your group actually knows how to use them, not just the one person who packed the bag.

Golden Rules for Safety in the Outdoors
- Have appropriate experience for the terrain, and carry adequate clothing, equipment, food and drink.
- Know how to use a map and compass, and don't travel alone in serious terrain.
- Respect rivers and weather, and leave your trip details and intentions with someone before you go.
If You Ever Need to Call for Help
Plan your message carefully: your location, who you are, current weather, the assistance required, terrain conditions, urgency, any medical issues, and when and how to make further contact. While waiting, make your location visible to air and ground teams with bright colours, a smoky fire if it's safe to light one, movement, a whistle or a signal mirror.
