3G in NZ Is Now Fully Switched Off
The original shutdown announcement, back in 2022, targeted 31 August 2024. It didn't happen then. The date slipped to March 2025, then slipped again to 31 December 2025, the date One NZ (formerly Vodafone) actually completed its 3G shutdown.

All three networks also used the switch-off to reclaim 2G and 3G spectrum and reallocate it to 4G and 5G, which is genuinely part of why NZ's mobile coverage and speeds have improved over the past two years. But that upgrade came at the direct cost of anything still relying on the older networks.
What Actually Stops Working
Most people are already on 4G or 5G phones and never noticed the switch-off happen. The real impact lands on specific categories of hardware.
- 3G-only phones and tablets: can no longer make calls, send texts, use data, or dial 111, including in an emergency.
- Cellular signal boosters and repeaters: any unit that only amplifies 2G or 3G signal now amplifies nothing.
- GPS and asset trackers: older tracking units built around 3G modems have gone silent, whether they're on vehicles, trailers, plant, or containers.
- Security and medical alarms: monitored alarms and medical alert devices using 3G for backup communication may no longer report an event.
- EFTPOS and IoT devices: some standalone EFTPOS terminals and smart meters used 3G as a fallback connection.
The common thread is devices you set and forget. A phone in daily use tells you immediately if something's wrong. A tracker on a trailer that only gets checked at the annual WOF doesn't.
Cellular Boosters: The One Most Businesses Miss
A cellular booster works by capturing a weak outside signal, amplifying it, and rebroadcasting it inside a building, vehicle, or vessel. If that booster was built to only amplify 2G and 3G frequencies, and plenty on the market were, it now has nothing left to amplify. Anyone relying on it for indoor or rural coverage will find their signal has quietly vanished, without the booster itself showing any obvious fault.
Modern boosters, including the Cel-Fi range we supply, are built around 4G and 5G frequencies and remain fully effective. If your booster is more than a few years old and you're not certain which frequencies it supports, it's worth a five-minute check rather than assuming it's still doing its job.
GPS and Asset Trackers: Checking Your Fleet
GPS trackers rely on the cellular network to actually report a location back to you. The GPS positioning itself hasn't changed, satellites don't care about 3G shutdowns, but if the tracker's modem was built for 3G, it has no way left to send that position anywhere.
For a business tracking a fleet, trailers, or high-value plant, this is worth checking properly rather than assuming everything's fine because nothing's obviously broken. A tracker that's gone silent looks identical to one that's simply parked and stationary, right up until you actually need the location data.
- Confirm each tracker's connectivity spec, 4G or LTE-M is current, 3G or 2G is not.
- Check your fleet dashboard for units that have stopped reporting in recent months, not just today.
- If you're unsure how old your tracking hardware is, that uncertainty is itself a reason to check.
