How Does Starlink Work?
Traditional satellite internet relies on a handful of satellites parked in geostationary orbit, roughly 36,000km above the equator. At that distance, a signal takes long enough to travel up and back down that round-trip latency typically runs 600 to 800 milliseconds, noticeable enough to make video calls and cloud software genuinely frustrating.
Starlink solves this with a completely different architecture: thousands of satellites in low earth orbit, roughly 550km up, more than 60 times closer to Earth than a geostationary satellite. That shorter distance cuts round-trip latency down to roughly 20 to 50 milliseconds, close enough to fibre broadband that most people can't tell the difference in daily use.
The Dish: How Your Site Connects to the Satellites
The Starlink dish, officially the user terminal, uses phased-array antenna technology rather than a traditional dish that physically rotates to track a single fixed point in the sky. It electronically steers its signal to whichever satellite is currently overhead, with no moving parts to wear out or fail.
Because Starlink's satellites orbit much closer to Earth, they move fast. Each one is only visible from a fixed point on the ground for around four to six minutes before dropping below the horizon. The dish automatically hands off your connection to the next satellite as this happens, a process that's invisible during normal use.
From Satellite to the Internet
Once your data reaches a satellite, it's typically relayed straight down to the nearest ground station, which connects into the same fibre backbone used by every other internet provider. Newer Starlink satellites also carry laser links that pass data between satellites in orbit, reducing how often a signal needs to route through a ground station and extending reliable coverage to remote areas, including at sea and in mountainous terrain.

NZ Starlink connections grew from around 58,000 to 85,000 in the year to June 2025, and rural market share rose from 19% to 27%, overtaking Spark as the leading rural provider.
